Email your MP to urge clemency for Syed Suhail bin Syed Zin

Dear (your Member of Parliament),

I am writing as a concerned resident of (your GRC) to urge you to advise President Halimah Yacob to grant clemency to Syed Suhail bin Syed Zin, who has been sentenced to execution this Friday under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

The death penalty is a cruel and inhumane punishment, one which is irreversible in the case of miscarriages of justice. In addition, there is no conclusive evidence that it is more effective at deterring crime than other forms of punishment. For this reason, the UN General Assembly has condemned the death penalty, and 106 countries have abolished it.

Steps must be taken to rehabilitate offenders, rather than imprisoning them or in the case of Syed Suhail bin Syed Zin, permanently ending their lives. With 67% of Singapore's penal population imprisoned for drug-related offences, it is crucial that we shift our focus towards ameliorating the socio-economic forces that lead to drug addiction.

I urge you to advise President Halimah Yacob to grant clemency to Syed Suhail bin Syed Zin. Syed, and others like him, deserve compassion and rehabilitation, not to have their lives taken. Halting Syed's execution would be the first step towards bringing Singapore's drug policy in line with international human rights standards, and joining the rest of the world in abolishing the death penalty.
