Some important notes:
- You can’t get every single gate listed here in one run. No matter how many you do get, it gets capped to 7 at the end. There’s no point in going for more than 9.
- It’s possible to lose gates in a few places. I’m not listing those here. Yet. Maybe later.
- This guide doesn’t explicitly tell you how to get every possible gate in one run. It’s just a reference for where they can be...obtained? Opened? Unlocked? As a hint though, the ones I usually go for are gates 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 11, 12, 13.
- Some text may become slightly incorrect as Retribution is edited. Some of the conditions might also change. This is probably not the final version of the guide.
- There’s a lot of branching paths for a few of these gates. I didn’t write out every single possible way to obtain them. These are some of the more direct/easier routes.
- Contains a few references to drugs and suicide.
CHAPTER 12
GATE 1
Situation:
- Attempting to use the trap left behind in Argent’s mind from Rebirth
Minimum Reqs:
- In Rebirth, must have gone into Argent’s mind and left a trap that was never set off
- Must not have both suit telepathy upgrade and subtle telepathy >= 75 (one or the other is fine, just not both)
Exceptions:
Method:
- My telepathy is still my greatest weapon; let's make good use of it.
- It might have decayed, but I will try to trigger the sword of Damocles I left in her mind months ago.
- I use the thread to guide me inside, trying to possess her again.
CHAPTER 14
GATE 2
Situation:
- Being tackled out a window by Blaze
Minimum Reqs:
- Must be a hero hunter trying to make the heroes better
- Suitag must be true before this fight
- Must either take out the dampeners before fighting Blaze, or have at least one of the following:
- Terrifying suit
- Imposing suit
- Infamy >= 70
Exceptions:
Method:
- Use the civilians for cover
- Blaze shows promise, I can work with that.
- Deja vu, I close my eyes and wait for the impact.
Method 2:
- Can’t have speed or strength upgrades for the villain suit
- ... press the attack on Blaze, going hard.
- Blaze shows promise, I can work with that.
- Deja vu, I close my eyes and wait for the impact.
CHAPTER 15
GATE 3
Situation:
Minimum Reqs:
Exceptions:
- Can’t get gates 4, 5, 6 if you get this one
Method:
- It's hopeless; I might as well give up.
THERAPY
GATE 4
Situation:
- Having a bad time in therapy
Minimum Reqs:
- Go see a therapist
- Suitag must be true
- Scar value > 90
Exceptions:
Method:
- Any choice x3
- "Afraid," I admit. "There's a reason why I repress things."
- Any choice
- "I think I might be a very bad person."
- Either of these options:
- "That's none of your business," I say sharply.
- I hesitate before admitting the truth. "Yes."
- Any choice x2
- I remember that building, climbing the stairs…
Method 2:
- Any choice x3
- "What do you think?" I snap. "It didn't feel good."
- "Right now? Myself."
- "I don't trust you."
- Any choice
- "It doesn't matter if I want to trust people, I can't."
- "Maybe I am, but I'd rather worry too much than too little."
- Either of these options:
- "That's none of your business," I say sharply.
- I hesitate before admitting the truth. "Yes."
- Any choice x2
- I remember that building, climbing the stairs…
Method 3:
- Any choice x3
- "Tired." I sigh. "I don't even know where to start."
- "How hard it is." I look down. "Just being here. Existing."
- Either of these options:
- "That's none of your business," I say sharply.
- I hesitate before admitting the truth. "Yes."
- Any choice x2
- I remember that building, climbing the stairs…
Method 4:
- Any choice x3
- "Tired." I sigh. "I don't even know where to start."
- "Everything." It's true, isn't it?
- Any choice
- "It makes no sense. Why care in the first place?"
- Maybe... maybe I do need help.
- Either of these options:
- "That's none of your business," I say sharply.
- I hesitate before admitting the truth. "Yes."
- Any choice x2
- I remember that building, climbing the stairs…
Method 5:
- Must have the better life motivation
- Any choice x3
- Either of these two choices:
- "What do you think?" I snap. "It didn't feel good."
- "Like I need something stronger than a glass of water," I joke.
- "I was supposed to set the pace here, right?" I raise my voice. (if vice isn’t alcohol)
- "People..." I say vaguely. "The world?"
- "So what?" I ask.
- Either of these options:
- "That's none of your business," I say sharply.
- I hesitate before admitting the truth. "Yes."
- Any choice x2
- I remember that building, climbing the stairs…
GATE 5
Situation:
- Still having a bad time in therapy
Minimum reqs:
- Go see a therapist
- Scar from Rebirth must have been either friendless, outsider, or hungry
- (If you’re trying for all three of these gates, don’t go with the outsider scar)
Exceptions:
Method 1:
- Continues from Gate 4
- One of these options, depending on step’s scar:
- I didn't choose; someone else did. (friendless scar, value > 90)
- Everything that belongs to them. (hungry scar, value > 90)
- I don't know. If I did, I'd fix it. (outsider scar, value <= 60)
Method 2:
- Must have either friendless or outsider scar
- Any choice x3
- "Afraid," I admit. "There's a reason why I repress things."
- Any choice
- "For not being good at this."
- One of these:
- I didn't choose, someone else did. (friendless scar, value > 90)
- I don't know. If I did, I'd fix it. (outsider scar, value <= 60)
Method 3:
- Must have hungry scar, value > 90
- Any choice x3
- "Afraid," I admit. "There's a reason why I repress things."
- Any choice
- "I don't even know at this point."
- Any choice x2
- Everything that belongs to them.
GATE 6
Situation:
- Finishing up with Dr. Finch
Minimum Reqs:
- Go see a therapist
- Scar value must be > 90
- Villainy (ruthlessness) must be > 50
Exceptions:
Method 1:
- Continues from Gate 5
- Any option at the end with Dr. Finch. Should be one of these three:
- She's also trying to help. I'll smile and deflect.
- I'll adjust her memory, erasing her suspicion.
- I'll adjust her memory and make her remove all traces of me.
CHAPTER 16
GATE 7
Situation:
- Exhausting your telepathy at the auction
- You might not actually need all of the things in the reqs section to get this gate. It’s just what I needed for the path I took, because figuring out how to get willpower low enough here is an experience I don’t wish to repeat just yet.
Minimum reqs:
- Scar value must be 100
- Strength of mind (force) must be >= 70
- Suit must have upgraded telepathy
- Must either have infamy >= 45 or at least enough money to be considered well-off
- Must be aware of the regenerator before the auction (easiest way is the better life motivation)
- Must have told Mortum to “swallow [their] pride and just buy the thing,” regarding the gun
Exceptions:
Method 1:
- I will infiltrate the auction as [villain].
- I went for a visit as [the puppet] to get the lay of the land.
- Ditch Iris. (Don’t allow her to show you to the auction hall)
- I will try to find Shroud.
- I will test the dampeners against my telepathy.
- Your willpower should now be ‘tired’
- If I can get past the dampeners I could stop other bidders.
- Mortum must be here to get this option, hence telling them to buy it themself
- Your willpower should now be ‘exhausted’
- I telepathically start infighting in the crowd.
- I make the security staff fire wildly into the crowd.
**Sidenote:
If anyone figures out how to get the gate from choosing “I try to spread panic to make people leave” please let me know so I can add it. Not sure if it’s possible? It also requires ‘exhausted’ willpower, but without suit telepathy.
GATE 8
Situation:
- Exhausting your telepathy a little bit more at the auction
Minimum reqs:
- Willpower must be exhausted
- Same reqs as Gate 7, except you don’t need the scar value to be 100
Exceptions:
Method 1:
- Follow steps for gate 7
- My hand twitch as I turn to them, why aren't they dead yet?
GATE 9
Situation:
- MOVE. Still at the auction.
Minimum reqs:
- Willpower must be exhausted
Exceptions:
Method 1:
- Must be unaware of the regenerator before the auction
- Must not be a thief
- Must not use a rocket launcher
- Just….be sneaky
- Make a hole in the casino roof with nanovores.
- One of these two:
- I'll influence her to give me the gun, then go.
- I'll make her forget the case in a corner as she leaves.
- Stick around
- I need to know. I'll stay hidden and watch.
- Move. Move. They need to move. MOVE
GATE 10
Situation:
- Fighting ‘Oryx.’ Still at the auction.
Minimum reqs:
- Suit can’t have upgraded telepathy
Exceptions:
Method 1:
- Must be aware of regenerator
- Mortum can’t be at the auction
- Infiltrate the auction
- I will keep track of the buyer and steal it from them later.
- Any choice that isn’t immediately leaving
- I need to take her out fast, can I do that?
- Good, tools for you to use against her.
Method 2:
- Must be unaware of regenerator
- Mortum can’t be at the auction
- Infiltrate the auction
- Either keep an eye on Oryx, or join her
- Any option that doesn’t involve immediately leaving
- I will follow Oryx, what is she up to?
- I'll wait until she's through the hole, then follow.
- I need to take her out fast, can I do that?
- Good, tools for you to use against her.
IMPORTANT:
To actually get this gate, a variable called ‘securefailure’ must be false. This has to do with the way the dampeners are taken out. These are the easiest:
- A brainwashed security guard will turn it off.
- Must have either scanned the staff beforehand, or have both subtle manipulations (subterfuge) > 75 and daring < 40
- [Rosie/Boris] will blow up the security hub with a missile launcher.
- They must have been hired on
- Must either be a tactician, or have the puppet scout out the auction
CHAPTER 17
GATE 11
Situation:
- Meeting Mortum at the bar as yourself.
Minimum reqs:
- Strength of mind (force) must be >= 80
- Puppet must be anything other than business associates with Mortum
- Must not be just using Mortum
- Don’t have Mortum research Shroud
Exceptions:
Method 1:
- Time to show my hand and meet in person
- Any choice x2
- "You deserve to know the truth." About [the puppet].
- Any choice
- One of these is easiest:
- I can't do it. I can't say the words and drift off into quiet.
- “I didn't mean start liking you this much."
- I refuse to let it end like this, I'm going after [Mortum].
CHAPTER 18
GATE 12
Situation:
- On the way to see the Rangers.
Minimum reqs:
- Strength of mind (force) or subtle manipulations (subterfuge) must be > 80
Exceptions:
Method 1:
- My shields are fraying fast.
GATE 13
Situation:
- A conversation with Steel.
Minimum reqs:
- Scar value must be >= 90
- Must be aware that Steel was looking for you
- Happens in Chapter 13, when visiting Rangers’ HQ. Sit through the conversation with Steel without deflecting. The “I’m not going to tell you what happened” choice is the easiest one.
Exceptions:
Method 1:
- Go on the outing with Steel and don’t run off
- I stare at him in horror. He knew. And did nothing. If he had...
- I need to get out of there now. To hell with Steel.
CHAPTER 19
GATE 14
Situation:
- Shutting down some minds while the Rat King pilots the armor.
Minimum reqs:
- Get captured at the auction
- Either strength of mind or subtle manipulations must be > 80 (to not get red threaded)
Exceptions:
Method 1:
- Either be a known telepath (to already be drugged), or choose:
- I discretely try to read their minds for information (subterfuge must be <= 75)
- Most choices won’t matter for this one. Just don’t be cooperative at all.
- One of these, depending on HGrep value and infamy (if low enough, won’t even appear):
- “I'm nobody's dog," I snarl. Never again.
- "Fuck. You." I growl. "I work alone."
- Any choice during the Jake scene
- No time to be subtle, I'll just shut down their minds.
