5. Give with Patience & Empathy This is a crisis. Efficiency matters-but kindness matters more.

Misc. Resources and Tips:

  • From Mask Block STL: Please wear masks while outdoors to protect yourselves from Tornado lung- there is debris with asbestos, mold, dust, etc. Masks are available at 4343 W. Florissant with frequent drop offs

  • Write a letter or email your concerns to: pscinfo@psc.mo.gov (Public Service Commission) or Val the Public Service Commission and leave a comment 61-800-392-4211
  • Need help speaking or writing your story? Contact our TTGSTL Renters Hotline: (314) 252-8356 Or email us at info@tenantstransformingstl.org
  • Document everything before you clean up. Take photos and video of all damage — inside and out. Include structural damage, downed trees, broken windows, water damage, roof damage, etc.
  • Make a written list of damaged items (furniture, electronics, appliances, clothing, etc.) with rough values. Photos of receipts help, but aren’t required.
  • Don’t throw anything away until your adjuster sees it, unless it’s a health hazard.
  • File a claim ASAP, even if you’re not sure how bad the damage is. Claims can always be updated — it’s better to get in the queue.
  • Ask for “ALE” coverage (Additional Living Expenses) if your home is unlivable — it can cover hotels, food, clothes, etc.
  • Be wary of scammers offering inspections or repairs. Don’t pay cash. Don’t sign over your insurance check. Use local, licensed contractors only.
  • Keep receipts for everything: temporary repairs, hotels, meals, fuel, cleanup, etc.
  • If you’re a renter, file a claim with your renter’s insurance. Your landlord is responsible for the building, you are responsible for your stuff.
  • Flood damage is not covered by standard homeowner’s insurance unless you have a separate flood policy.
  • Finally, don’t be afraid to push back on lowball estimates — you’re allowed to negotiate, and you can hire an adjuster if needed.

  • If your property has been damaged by the storm and is tagged with an orange “DANGER - ENTRY PROHIBITED” sticker, actions to pause condemnation of your property are below.
  • 1. Document everything. Take clear photos of the sticker and all visible damage from multiple angles.
  • 2. Contact the City of St. Louis Building Division immediately by calling 314-622-3313 to ask for a full inspection or appeal instructions.
  • 3. If you disagree with the city’s findings you may hire a licensed structural engineer for a second opinion.
  • 4. Submit a formal appeal or request for a review; this can pause condemnation and allow you to gather support or aid.
  • 5. Visit DisasterAssistance.gov to apply for assistance with repairs and relief funding.
  • As of 06/06/2025 if you believe your building was given an incorrect assessment or if the condition of your building has changed you can submit a request with details and photos to have your property’s condition be reassessed at bit.ly/STLTornadoReassessment
