Background Information on Trainer:
Crystal Dyrcz-Smith
Hi, my name is Crystal, I am a certified AKC evaluator. I have a behavioral science degree, communications certificate, and a master’s of science in psychology, with a concentration in counseling. I have been training dogs for approximately 16 years. I love training dogs! I consider myself lucky to have the skills to help both dogs and people and feel this work is what I was built for. I believe that there is no such thing as a one size fits all approach. Possessing the ability to accurately analyze human and dog behavior on a case-by-case basis is critical with regards to tailoring a treatment plan for both dog and owner. My work as a therapist and a dog trainer go hand-in-hand and help me to empathize with humans and dogs. I teach people how to understand their dogs’ worldview, as my goal is to bridge the communication gap so clients and their dogs can understand each other and work as a team.
My experience with dogs began when I signed up as a volunteer with the Greater California German Shepherd Rescue and fostered and worked with approximately 40 German Shepherds. These dogs were way above my pay grade at the time and were excellent teachers. Through fostering I became passionate in my quest to understand dog behavior. I have apprenticed highly skilled trainers who specialize in rehabilitating dogs with behavioral issues, including: aggression, reactivity, separation anxiety, and fear. I worked under a mentor for the first six years of my career. I currently work as a trainer for Dog Obedience 4-Way-STOP Method, owned by my mentor, Gary Gilbert, and primarily work with aggressive, fearful, and reactive dogs. I do not use tools, just a flat collar. My goal is always to heal the root cause, not punish the symptoms. This gives one a “thinking dog” who has the capacity for impulse control, emotional regulation, and good decision making skills.
Rescue groups hire me to evaluate shelter dogs who are quarantined (after biting a human and breaking skin). Due to the stress of living in a kennel in the shelter environment these dogs are typically barrier reactive, extremely fearful, dog and/or people reactive, and are not accessible to the public. The shelter environment can be detrimental to a dog's mental health. Assessments are networked to rescue groups in California and across the country to help the dogs get rescued. I have also taught dog behavior and handling skills seminars for Friends of the Animal Community (rescue group), Oakdale shelter, Stockton shelter veterinary staff, and Stanislaus shelter. I was also asked to help update policies and procedures to include safe handling skills for Stanislaus shelter.
I have also been a trainer for Silver Paw Ranch (now Victory’s Service Dog Ranch) for seven-years. This organization provides service dogs and weekly training for Veterans who live with the debilitating symptoms of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Military Sexual Trauma (MST), and mobility issues. I teach Veterans how to train their dogs to pass the Canine Good Citizen Test and Urban Public Access Test, then each dog learns tasks specific to their handlers' needs. I am the head trainer for Stanislaus and San Joaquin County.
I am the trainer for Prisoners Uniting People and Puppies (PUPP). I work at the Sierra Conservation Center (SCC), California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. I teach inmates to train dogs. Friends of the Animal Community (FOAC) pays me and covers all expenses for the dogs. For this program, 12 “unadoptable” shelter dogs are selected and live with the inmates for 1-3 months. These dogs are selected because they are unmanageable for the average adopter due to behavioral issues, and/or are on the euthanasia list. I teach weekly classes to help the inmates train their dogs to pass the Canine Good Citizen test, then the dogs are adopted and 12 more shelter dogs come into the program. Several of the inmates have gone on to have careers in dog training. The PUPP program is my favorite job. In 2025 we started a program to train rescue dogs as mobility and psychiatric service dogs for Veterans at SCC. If you want to learn more about service dogs please check out my research: Source: ScholarWorks https://share.google/pugSLCPj4mW9DLYCe
Please look into FOAC and all the amazing things they do to keep dogs out of shelters and find homes for shelter dogs and cats.
I also work with a program at the county jail (Veterans unit) to help shelter dogs learn socialization skills and taught a course for the Sheriff's department deputies to teach dog behavior and obedience.
Better World Rescue also hires me to teach Canine Good Citizen (CGC) classes and classes for reactive and fearful dogs. I also train dogs with new fosters, adopters, and people in the community who need help with their dogs’ behavioral issues (before their dog ends up in the shelter). Please look into Better World Rescue and all the amazing things they do to keep dogs out of shelters and find homes for shelter dogs and cats.
When not training dogs, I work as an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT). My research background includes investigating the impact service dogs have on the symptoms of PTSD in Veterans, learned helplessness as a predictor variable for length of stay in domestic violence relationships, the relationship between chronic stress and short-term memory, and trauma related disorders. I plan to work with the Veteran and/or prison population as an LMFT in the future and incorporate dogs into my therapy practice in some capacity.

I am a disabled vet and former K9 handler for a local police department. I got extensive training with the police department and am well versed in the training required. Crystal is by far as good or better at training dogs, especially for veterans with a variety of needs for service dogs. Not only is she great at working with the dogs but is also a great trainer for the vets. In my experience, the dogs are usually easier to work with than their owners but Crystal takes the time to ensure the people are trained as well. I have seen her take very difficult dogs and owners and train them to be excellent companions and the dogs to be great for their owners. She is good with several different breeds and I have been very happy to see what she can do. I am also an evaluator for the AKC good citizen program and have evaluated dozens of dogs trained by Crystal with great success. I highly recommend her as a dog trainer.

Dear Crystal
Thank you for helping Hannah and me through the journey. We have both grown so much and learned each other's language. It has been a voyage of discovery. Hannah has overcome her fear of humans. And you have given me the tools and the guidance to help her and I have learned to trust my instincts. It has been such an honor meeting you and you have forever changed our lives and given us the courage and strength to carry on. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts❤️❤️

Crystal,
It’s been a great experience being trained to train our German Shepherd, Zeke!
Crystal spent a lot of time with our group collectively, and Individually. She has a ton of patience and experience which helped us learn the skills and tools needed to give us confidence with our dog. Because of Crystal, Zeke listens well, responds well, and is not aggressive to animals or humans. We’ve learned SO MUCH with her! Thank you Crystal!

Hi
We adopted a 2 year old German shepherd from the shelter and quickly realized we were completely out of our depths. What seemed like a great dog came home to being unable to walk on a leash without causing blisters, trying to eat our cats, no recall, no potty training, no obedience whatsoever, Jumping and nipping our son. We called Crystal for help in desperation. I was ready to take him back to shelter and within one session she changed our life around. We immediately could walk our dog, she gave us the tools needed to work on the cats and potty training, with hard work and patience we now have the best dog ever. All thanks to Crystal. You won't find a better trainer. EVER.

Crystal,
I’ve seen firsthand how your techniques, along with a generous dose of patience and persistence can take a dog from being unmanageable, stressed out, and even dangerous and transform them into a happy, well-balanced pet who is truly enjoyable to have around. I especially like the way this class helps owners and handlers gain perspective on how dogs experience our world so we can understand why they’re showing behaviors we don’t like and how we can address the root causes and teach the behaviors we do want. Handlers leave the class with practical knowledge and an array of techniques to confidently address real world situations and enjoy time with their dogs wherever that takes them.

Hi! I have a fear aggressive/reactive dog who I have had a lot of trouble with and I was scared I would have to get rid of him. After researching trainers, I came across Crystal and she was just who I needed to help get me on track with training and gave tons of advice to help my dog, Cooper! She was flexible with her schedule, patient, and always made sure I had the right resources to help guide me with my dog. If I hadn't moved cities, she would still be my trainer to this day and I would always recommend her to dogs in need! Thank you Crystal, we will always be thankful for you!

Hi, my name is Lee Snyder,
I was involved in a dog training program that Crystal over saw and have to say she really knows her business. We were working with rescue dogs with various traumas, some scared of their own shadows, yet she was not only able to help them, but us in the process. I myself had done extensive work on myself but through her guidance with the pupps was able to bring it all home incorporating the pieces within myself. I truly owe her more than she probably knows and those around, as well as myself, really benefited from it. You know what they say, "you don't train the pupps without training the people."

Crystal has been helping me develop my dog training skills through first Silver Paw Ranch, and then Victory's Service Dog Ranch for the last four and a half years. I am a disabled veteran and she has worked with my dog (psychiatric service dog) and I to become a productive team within our community. Crystal and Dexter (her dog) have taught me skills that have enabled me to take on a greater leadership role within our organization as a trainer.
Crystal is extremely patient and knowledgeable with the people and dogs that come to her. Duke (my service dog) passed the AKC Good Citizenship, and the Urban Public Access under the training we received from Crystal. Due to the handling skills she has imparted I feel confident in exposing my dog to new stimuli. Duke and I highly recommend Crystal (and Dexter) for training.

Hi,
I’ve known of Crystal and her dog training skills for many years. I respect her work and the time she spends at our local shelter assessing dogs and helping to save their lives.
As a fellow dog trainer, Crystal has been very generous with her knowledge and training skills with me and I’m constantly learning when we’re together.
We recently had an “Ask the Trainer” table at a local business. Crystal was able to help several people with training issues concerning their dogs. She gave clear instructions on how the dog parents could help their dogs and was kind and patient with each person. There was one family in particular that had a very difficult dog. Crystal took the time to teach them skills with their dog that will improve the quality of their lives.
I highly recommend Crystal as a dog trainer and happily refer clients to her that are out of my scope of work.

Crystal is amazing! She is a true dog whisperer! She has helped my Pebbles do a whole 360°. Seeing her work with Pebbles and seeing Pebbles learn and doing so well makes me so happy. My baby is an overly excited 1 year old American Pitbull terrier/American Bully and gets over stimulated in new places and around new people. This didn't start happening until she was around 5/6 months old. Last July she first started a group training and Pebbles couldn't even be in class or close to any dogs. By the last day of class she transformed into a whole new dog. Now for this new session of group training that just started in September 2023 Pebbles can be right there in class concentrating and being next to other dogs without getting overly excited. When she does get distracted and starts to get too excited I am able to pull her back or she on her own snaps her attention right back to me and checks in with me. It has been an amazing experience to see and go through and it is all thanks to Crystal! Pebbles and I thank you so much!

Hello, my name is Fernanda and I am the proud owner of my 1 year old Cane Corso Athena. I sought out help for my pup when she was 5-6 months old and I couldn’t be happier to have ended up with Crystal as our trainer. The Corso breed is one I have always been fascinated with and had done all the research I could to apply to her training. As smart as my pup was to understand all her sits, downs, heels, etc I couldn't understand why she was so fearful and slowly beginning to show signs of aggression in the most random scenarios. The fear and anxiety of knowing the kind of breed I possess started becoming very overwhelming and I called for help and we got Crystal. Within 10 minutes of her observing us she was immediately able to tell me where MY mistakes were in her training that were leading to her behaviors. To the usual day to day dog owner its so easy to say “my dog is very well trained” just because they can sit on command or go down for a treat. In reality the REAL training is for the dog owner. It falls in the way you hold your composure to guide your dog and yourself in and out of an overstimulating situation. It's so easy to blame our dogs for bad behavior but fail to understand that our body language speaks to our dogs more clearly and way before our words do. For me it was especially difficult to understand and follow through with learning to advocate for my dog, she definitely got me out of my comfort zone for the well being of my pup. NO my dog is NOT for petting. Believe it or not, that phrase is EXTREMELY difficult for me to say to strangers but very crucial for the success of my dog's training. I went from having a very shy, fearful, overly excited peeing pup to a confident, calm, well mannered corso in the most chaotic settings. And I have Crystal Dyrcz to thank for that. So from Athena and myself, Thank you so much Crystal :)
-Fernanda & Athena
I have been with the Prisoners Uniting People and Puppies (PUPP) since its beginnings over 6 years ago. We have had different trainers with different strengths and they have been very good. But when Crystal came to us and started training, the change in the program was amazing. She taught the basic Canine Good Citizen, which is the basis on how these dogs get adopted so they have manners, but she went on to give the inmates the tools to work with many different styles of training, basically learning the behavioral aspects. It seemed like a whole new world opened up for some of these inmates and their improvement in training the dogs was remarkable.
And although I have over 40 years of working with animals in the medical field, I learn something at every training class when I watch her explain behavioral characteristics to these guys. We are very lucky to have her for our PUPP training.

Hi Crystal,
I cannot endorse Crystal and her training methods enough. She worked diligently with Millie, the rescue dog I am fostering who was somewhat out of control and is now a wonderful part of our household. Although I say she trained Millie, she actually trained both of us, so we now understand what our roles are and how to work together. Her explanations, hands on training and patience made all the difference. Thanks Crystal!
Bruce & Millie
My experience with Crystal as a trainer and teacher is somewhat unique. During the height of the pandemic I was going through the challenging process of raising a rather difficult breed of dog, a Czechoslovakian Wolfdog (Freya).
Freya needed a handler with training skills that was above and beyond what your normal dog would require. I made the difficult decision at the time to re-home Freya with Crystal while still remaining in contact.
This turned out to be the best thing for Freya. Throughout the years I have watched her grow into an amazingly obedient adult dog that still has that goofy puppy side. She no longer struggles with leash aggression and follows commands extremely well. A complete 180 from the dog I was attempting to train.
I can tell you from first hand experience that this breed requires an amazing amount of patience and guidance as a trainer. Both qualities Crystal has in abundance. I would highly recommend her for training in any situation as she is aptly capable of handling even the toughest situation.
Thank you Crystal for providing Freya the safety and home that she needed and deserved.

Over the last 3 years, Crystal has been evaluating fearful/mislabeled dogs located at the Stanislaus Animal Services Agency (SASA) in Modesto, CA. Crystal has been working closely with our team of volunteers (SASA Rescue Support Team) and staff to give the most disadvantaged animals a chance. Crystal's efforts continue to bring value to our life-saving mission, and increase the awareness about responsible pet ownership. Crystal is knowledgeable, responsive, efficient, hard-working, respectful, and professional. She makes a difference and is a great pleasure to work with.

My name is Chad and today I’m a certified positive reinforcement trainer. I started training dogs under the guidance of Crystal 2 years ago. I had never seen anyone so in tune with dogs before. She doesn’t just train dogs, she dives into the psychology aspect that allows the dog to overcome rather than suppress its issues.
Crystal taught me how to build confidence in a broken dog, earn trust from a scared dog, and how to meet each dog on its level.
Not one week goes by that I don’t reach out for advice from her and she always comes through with great suggestions and feedback.
Crystal is a role model and inspiration to many people. I’m lucky to have her as my mentor.

Amazing job everyone and thank you again for the support!
While we’re now convinced you’re all paid actors, we would hire you and your dogs again lol. Wishing everyone the best 💖 🐾

Crystal, even though my dog and I missed a few classes it was great meeting you and learning so much about the feelings we give off to our animals. I knew dogs were sensitive, but I didn't realize how our feelings affected them. My dog is really in tune to people around him. My dog learned more in the time I was in the class then 6 months prior. Thank you so much you are awesome. I wish I had the calm presents that you possess. ❤️
Crystal,
Appreciate the new learnings from this course to help my fosters. Learning that it starts with me and how I respond. Now, I can work on this with my own dog. lol
Crystal,
We really are glad we were able to save him but we mean it when we say it wasn’t possible without you🐾

Crystal,
Thank you for letting me take the next course. Also thank you for the time, work & patience you put into these classes. You are appreciated!
Thank you Crystal. Excellent class!
Crystal, We both definitely learned so much more about our feelings as well as how to better understand Hinanos feelings and signs.
Me and Ivy have learned so much from this class and we owe it all to you Crystal! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the love and care that you put into our pups, especially despite the hard times that you're going through at the moment (my close friend passed away during this class). It's been such a blessing to meet you and to take part in this course! 🤍🐾
Thank you Crystal. Excellent class!
Thank you so much Crystal. You sure have lots of patience!

Crystal, I know you already know this but, you're such a good trainer. Like shockingly better than any other trainer I've met.
When I met Kodi he was a big scared aggressive dog. He tried to attack anyone that opened his kennel and at least one volunteer had a pretty scary incident with him, he didn’t actually make contact with her (thank god!) but it was probably terrifying for her! My energy is soft and loving, Kodi trusted me very quickly. He’s always known that he’s safe in my home and with all the scars I found on his body I’ve always been proud of him for trusting me.
As soon as I picked him up he went to a board and train program with a trainer that was supposed to stop the aggression with other people too. It was a huge mistake. He came back injured after 4 days because she tried to use prong collars/e collars to force obedience.
After that, rain was dangerous, wind was dangerous, anyone that didn’t live in my house was dangerous, muzzles were dangerous, and any collar would cause panic. He didn’t want to go into a crate because previously he’d been left in them too long. Baths, hard pass, leaving the house, no thanks, and having visitors was impossible. My washer and dryer were his mortal enemies.
For months we worked really hard together to create positive associations and Kodi was doing so well with everything except strangers. Then I remembered that he seemed to really like Crystal when she did his shelter evaluation and contacted her for help. She remembered my sweet boy immediately and was a bit outraged that another trainer had further abused him, causing even more trauma. After 1 private session the change in him was noticeable!
Once we joined her reactive dog class everything came together for Kodi and I. She taught me that even though Kodi knows I’m safe for him, he didn’t know I would also keep him safe from others. The class is only 7 weeks and anyone who met Kodi now would probably not even realize that he wasn’t always a big silly love bug.
The Canine Good Citizen class is our next stop because he is still a brat for me most of the time 😂😂😂 But I’ll take him being naughty and getting into my garbage or jumping up on me to steal kisses. It means he feels safe enough to disobey me now, he knows I won’t hurt him for it
I’ll recommend Crystal’s classes to everyone I meet, they made such a huge positive impact on our lives and I hope everyone gets that opportunity

These classes are truly amazing! It sets not only the dog up for success but they're humans as well. It's a real bonding experience for you and your dog. Her classes have helped my Pebbles so much and Crystal also taught me about how Pebble’s brain worked so I could understand how I needed to communicate with her. Can't say enough great things about crystal! She is an exceptional instructor. She's able to make dog training understandable for humans, and dogs. She makes corrections by example. And then helps the student put it into practice. She is truly exceptional!! We would definitely recommend Crystal for your training 🐾 I made a couple of videos while Crystal used my German Shepherd as an example. As I look back over the video to go over training with my shepherd, he gets so excited because he recognizes Crystal's voice. That is saying a lot.

From Anita/Binkie, the little white dog💕
I have been adopted by a little 6lb, I believe, Yorkie Mix, doggie who is full of energy, curiosity and mischief. He is a sweet little boy that I don't believe was ever socialized or trained in any way. According to the vet, he is around 6-8 years old.
After attending Canine Training with Debbie and Crystal, he is now able to follow commands like sit, hold, and he's able to relax himself around other dogs to where we can even go to dog parks to make new friends. (This was not possible to do before attending doggie training)
Every day he gets a little better at loose leash walking as well, though with all his energy and curiosity, that's still a bit of a challenge that we're working on.
I was amazed at his progress each week of class. Not only was he noticeably calmer around other dogs, taking less and less time to
relax himself and get ready to learn, but the classes helped tremendously with building a wonderful bond between my new doggie and I.
Who ever said..."You can't teach an old dog new tricks"?!
I highly recommend Canine Training by Debbie and Crystal if you have a little fur baby that needs a bit of guidance!
UPDATE from Anita and Binky:
I wanted to report, to my surprise, Binky did great loose leash walking yesterday AND today! Something must have clicked and we can now walk all the way up and down the street!!! even with my cat joining us on the entire walk
I want to thank you guys again for the great training Anita/Stray
CGC Classes:
Crystal and Debbie are fantastic. Both of them made it easy for me to learn how to engage with my dog and from the love, reward and practice we were able to learn new things and incorporate them into the family day by day dynamics. Thank you for improving our lives.
From Erma/Dolly’s foster mom:
I can’t say enough great things about these two wonderful ladies, Debbie and Crystal. Our foster Dog recently graduated from their canine good citizen class. Before we started training with Debbie and Crystal we had an unexpected dog fight between our foster dog and one of our dogs. After the fight, I was full of anxiety. Unsure what to do and how to move forward, there was definitely tension between the dogs. This class not only gave me the confidence I needed to move forward, but also the tools to help train all of our dogs, build strong relationships between them and regain leadership. The class gave us step-by-step instructions to start basic training with our dogs, which intern gave them confidence in us. It was also comforting to be able to ask questions about issues that had popped up and received a quick educated response. I highly recommend any classes Debbie and Crystal have to offer.
Lots of Love,
Erma
"We had a fantastic experience in our dog training class with Debbie and Crystal! They were incredibly helpful, giving us hands- on guidance to work with our dog, Ziggy. Their patience and clear instructions made a big difference. The class size was just right, allowing for plenty of individual attention. We highly recommend them-and our Ziggy absolutely loves Ms. Debbie!”

After your training one staff brought Brunson to my office, when I read his notes later I realized she had tried to get him out before but was afraid of his kennel reactivity. So you made an impact on at least one person.. I appreciate you!

Hi Crystal,
We are currently doing evals based on Dogs Playing for Life training so the only written item we have thus far is an observation sheet. Do you have any shelter behavioral procedures that might be applicable to our operations?
Also, I wanted to share that one of our long-term staff members took out a kiddo that has been lunging and barking at the kennel door since his arrival. Even his intake pic was growling at the back of the kennel. Still have to try him with other staff as well, but when she employed some of the tactics you suggested, she ended up having no problem taking him out! Wanted to share that as an immediate success story resulting from your training. Thank you so much for giving our crew the tools they need and helping support a big culture change we’re working for at the shelter.
Thanks!
