On October 7, 2023, our world changed. We watched with horror as an evil terrorist group carried out the most barbaric attack against Jews since the Holocaust. We watched as Hamas murdered, burned, raped, and slaughtered over 1,200 Jewish men, women, children, and babies. We watched as members of Hamas and other Palestinians kidnapped 239 innocent people and ravaged the Jewish homeland with impunity. We watched as an attack that had zero regard for the sanctity of human life and an overwhelmingly zealous drive to perpetrate atrocities on an unimaginable level continued for hours on end. And this weekend, we watched with disgust as a group of CESJDS alumni circulated a letter that goes against every Jewish and Zionist value ingrained in us by our school and by our religion.
This letter, the “Community Open Letter”, is not only shameful in its impressive level of lies, propaganda, misinformation, and blatant falsehoods, but more so in its unique distinction of being written and circulated by fellow Jews, our own people. This letter was written by a small minority of CESJDS alumni and yet is attempting to control a narrative and speak for the majority of us. This small group of self-hating Jews wrote and signed this letter from a lofty position of privilege where they have the luxury to ponder fairness, proportionality, and Jewish values while Israeli mothers and fathers send their children into a war for the Jewish people’s survival. This letter not only publicly spouts falsehoods from a feigned position of moral and intellectual superiority, it directly adopts terminology created and used by the world’s most abhorrent terrorist groups and human rights abusers – the very same groups that are dedicated to the complete destruction of the State of Israel and the murder of every single Jew in the world, including the writers of that embarrassing letter.
It comes as a shock to many of us that our fellow alumni and Jews would stoop so low as to enthusiastically spread vicious blood libels about Israel like calling it an apartheid state or characterizing the war in Gaza as fueled by “genocidal intent.” It is incumbent upon all of us to remember that these blood libels are used to fuel antisemitic attacks around the world and have directly led to the harassment, assault, and even murder of innocent Jews in this country and elsewhere. As Jews and Zionists, we mourn the loss of our people and of all innocent civilians killed in armed conflict. But unlike some of our former classmates, we are clear on who is at fault: Hamas. And this is not because we were brainwashed by the curriculum at CESJDS, as the Community Open Letter suggests. It is because we are Jews – connected to our people, to our ancestors, and to our homeland.
Perhaps what is most baffling to many of us who read that abhorrent letter is that its writers and supporters attempt to argue that Judaism and Zionism are somehow separate, that the reason that Israel exists and everything that it stands for can somehow be disconnected from our religion and ethnicity. Judaism, Zionism, and Israel all go hand-in-hand; they are inseparable and without each other they would not exist. Criticism of the State of Israel is certainly acceptable, as is engaging in debate or arguments among Jews on policies moving forward, but this letter long since departed from those discussions. We, as proud Jews and Zionists, do not accept the use of words like genocide, apartheid, and colonialism to describe the actions and conduct of the Jewish state. It is truly difficult to comprehend how Jews can become so detached from reality that they resort to using Holocaust terminology like ‘Never Again’ against their own people. ‘Never Again’ means that we as a people and in a country will never stand idly by while our people are slaughtered, like they were on October 7, 2023. It means that we will never hesitate to defend ourselves against our enemies who are the true practitioners of genocide and oppression.
In closing, we reaffirm our commitment to the State of Israel and to the true values of the CESJDS community. We affirm our love for Israel, our proud Zionism, our support for the IDF, and our unrelenting fight against antisemitism and anti-Zionism in all forms, especially when it comes from those who claim to speak for us as Jews. The State of Israel is strong and will continue to fight for her survival. We will support and defend her existence just as she does for us. !עם ישראל חי! ביחד ננצח
