Supporting Undocumented and Mixed-Status Students
Created by Dr. Hortencia Jimenez, Sociology Professor

To support my students with the current ICE raids, which are causing significant psychological, academic, and emotional harm to them and their families, I created an[1] online module with resources, reassurance, and community-specific information to help them feel seen, supported, and reminded that they are not alone.

I invite you to use this template as a starting point for your own course shell. It’s not an exhaustive list, but a foundation you can build upon. Feel free to adapt it to meet the unique needs of your students by adding county, state, or institutional resources relevant to your area.

Module Outline

Unit 1: Welcome and overview of module

  • Here is my sample welcome module:

Hello Students,

I created this module with the intention of providing resources and support for all of you. Whether you are an immigrant, undocumented, from a mixed-status family, or an ally—this space is for you.

I know that many undocumented and mixed-status students experience fear, anxiety, hyper-vigilance, isolation, and stress—especially given the current wave of anti-immigrant rhetoric and ICE raids across California.

As a Mexican immigrant and member of a mixed-status family myself, I deeply understand the uncertainty and emotional toll these times can bring. I want you to know that you are not alone.

I am here as a safe space if you ever need to talk or need additional support. I also understand that what’s happening may impact your focus or academic performance. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need an extension on an assignment—there is absolutely no shame in asking for help. In fact, asking for help is a superpower. It takes courage, and the more you do it, the stronger you become.

In this module, you’ll find:

  • Hartnell College District Resolution
  • “Know Your Rights” Cards
  • Local (Monterey County) and Statewide Resources
  • Mental Health Support & Services
  • Additional National Resources

Con cariño,
Dr. Hortencia Jimenez
