DCMQG WRAPPED IN LOVE FOR JUSTICE LGBTQ QUILT
(SUMMER 2024)

Thank you for your interest in making blocks for this quilt! If you haven’t already, sign up to make specific blocks here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1MeE2c2GjYvohEX0zbmYlxDPPnBu0xYfekXAWtI88-ZI/edit?usp=sharing

FABRIC: For all fabrics, use tone-on-tone or other prints that read as solids if possible. (Please no holiday, baby, or novelty prints.) Solids are also fine.

PRIMARY COLOR: You have signed up to make blocks in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and/or purple. Please use bright colors, akin to the colors on the Pride flag.

                   Need   6.5” x 6.5” of your primary color(s)

ACCENT COLORS: Navy blue or dark purple; white; pastel blue; and pastel pink. For the pastel blue and pastel pink, use colors akin to the colors on the Trans Pride flag.  (See suggestions below before you cut this fabric.)

Need   0.75” x 6” strip of navy blue or dark purple (if you’re making blue or purple blocks, please make sure there’s some contrast between this stripe and the main color)

1” x 6” strip of light blue or light pink

1.25” x 5” strip of white

1.5” x 4” of light pink or light blue

STITCHING: Use a matching or neutral thread. 1.8mm or shorter stitch length.

PIECEING: Two options: (1) Traditional piecing, or (2) Foundation paper piecing.

Traditional piecing instructions:

  1. Cut your primary color block to 6.5” x 6.5”.
  2. From the bottom right corner, mark 3.5” up the right side, and 3.5” left on the bottom. Cut off that corner.
  3. Sew a 0.75” x 6” strip of navy blue or dark purple (to finish at 0.25” wide). (See suggestions below.)
  4. Then sew a 1” x 6” strip of pastel blue OR pastel pink (to finish at 0.5” wide).
  5. Then sew a 1.25” x 5” strip of white (to finish at 0.75” wide).
  6. Then sew a 1.5” x 4” piece of pastel pink OR pastel blue (whichever color you didn’t use in step #4) to finish the square.
  7. Trim the finished square to be 6.5” x 6.5”.  -------------------->

Suggestions:

  • You might find it easier to use larger pieces of the accent colors and trim them to size after you’ve sewn them. (Use the “to finish” sizes above, plus 0.25” for your seam allowance.)
  • Roughly trim the edges of each strip after you’ve sewn it on, to make aligning the next strip easier.  -------------------->

 Foundation paper piecing:

  • See the separate PDF for the FPP template. (Email Kris if you need this but don’t have it.)
  • Make sure you print the template at 100%. (Confirm it printed correctly using the 1” square.)
