2月12日，西雅图冬天少有的好天气，蓝天如洗，温暖如春，近千华人聚集在中国城的Hing Hay公园，纪念西雅图排华惨案136周年，重温历史，抗议仇恨，展望未来。

1886年西雅图的排华惨案发生在 2 月 6 日至 9 日，当时失去理智的暴徒迫使 300 多名西雅图华人在冰冷的寒冬里离开自己温暖的家，被迫登上去旧金山的船只，甚至有几个华人在暴乱中被杀害。今天来到纪念活动现场的各级政府官员一一讲话，痛斥西雅图这段丑恶的历史，强调今天的西雅图要建立真正多元包容的城市，绝不能让这段历史重演。到场官员包括前驻华大使，华盛顿州前州长骆家辉，美国国会议员Adam Smith，金郡郡长Dow Constantine，西雅图市市长Bruce Harrell，西雅图警察局长Adrian Diaz，曾任副市长方威武，贝尔维尤市市长Lynn Robinson和曾任市长李瑞林等。

专程从DC赶到西雅图的UCA会长薛海培最后致辞，他回顾了美国140年前通过“排华法案”之后华人遭到的迫害、暴力和驱逐对待之后讲到：“今天，一个新的种族主义和民族主义正在抬头，亚裔仇恨盛行，对华裔和亚裔的不信任表现得淋漓尽致。如果我们不保持警惕，历史可能会重演，我们不能让过去的丑陋历史重新回到我们的城市，再也不！再也不！”讲话之后 ，UCA华盛顿州分会会长李伟宣布游行开始。

集会和讲话结束之后西雅图华人和社区组织列队走上街头，高举横幅，高呼口号，重新走过祖辈被暴力赶出西雅图的道路。参加此次集会和游行的除了西雅图20+社区组织，还有奥林匹亚地区华人协会和Bellingham西北中华文化联谊会，以及来自斯波坎和塔可玛的华人朋友。西雅图警局为游行队伍开路，并一路护航，直到游行队伍返回中国城。这是UCA华盛顿州分会经过近两年酝酿之后发起的一次活动。

历史是镜子，提醒如果我们不去教育和开启民众，正面宣传亚裔在美国的贡献，不去倡导华人投入社会，回馈社区，发生在136年前的丑恶历史或许有可能重演。UCAWA将再接再厉，与华人组织和社区领袖们共同商议未来，力争把这个排华惨案纪念日变成美西北一个重大的华人和亚太裔的定期纪念活动。我们也将继续关注华人和亚太裔在华盛顿州的历史上和现在的不公平待遇或者歧视性事件，加强宣传和教育，让华盛顿州真正成为开放、包容、面向未来、能让华人安身立命的华州。在此，我们向所有参与的朋友和志愿者，向所有协助的社团组织和社区领导表示衷心的感谢！

On February 12, a sunny winter day in Seattle, with blue skies and warm spring weather, nearly one thousand Chinese community members gathered at Hing Hay Park in Chinatown to join the Chinese Expulsion Remembrance and March event, to revisit history of 1886 Seattle Riot, to protest against hatred, and to look forward to the future.

The 1886 Chinese expulsion riot in Seattle took place from February 6th to 9th, when angry mobs forced more than 300 Chinese families in Seattle to leave their warm homes in the freezing cold winter and forced them to board ships to San Francisco, and several Chinese were even killed during the riot. Officials from all levels of government who came to the memorial event today spoke out against this upsetting period in Seattle's history, emphasizing the need for Seattle today to build a truly diverse and inclusive city that must not allow this history to repeat itself. Officials in attendance included former Ambassador to China, former Washington State Governor Gary Locke, U.S. Congressman Adam Smith, King County Commissioner Dow Constantine, Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell, Seattle Police Chief Adrian Diaz, former Seattle Deputy Mayor Mike Fong, Bellevue Mayor Lynne Robinson, and former Bellevue Mayor Conrad Lee and others.

In his closing remarks, UCA President Haipei Shue, who traveled from DC to Seattle, recalled the persecution, violence and deportation of Chinese people in the United States after the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act 140 years ago, and said, "Today, a new racism and nationalism is on the rise, and Asian hatred is prevalent. Mistrust of Chinese and Asians is on full display. If we do not remain vigilant, history may repeat itself and we cannot allow the ugly history of the past to return to our city, never again! Never again!" After the speeches, UCA Washington State Chapter President David Lee called the march to order.

After the rally and speeches Seattle Chinese and community organizations paraded onto the streets, holding banners and chanting slogans to retrace the path of their ancestors who were violently driven out of Seattle. The rally and march was attended by more than twenty community organizations in Seattle, including Olympia Area Chinese Association and the Bellingham Northwest Chinese Cultural Fellowship, and Chinese Community from Spokane and Tacoma and many more^[a]. The Seattle Police Department opened the way for the parade and escorted the crowd all the way until everyone returned to Chinatown. This was an event initiated by the Washington State Chapter of UCA after nearly two years in the making.

History is the mirror that reminds us that if we do not educate and enlighten the public about the contributions of Asians in the U.S. and advocate for the Chinese to engage in society and give back to their communities, the upsetting history that happened 136 years ago may be repeated. UCAWA will continue the effort and will also continue to focus on the historical and current injustices or discriminatory incidents of Chinese and Asian Pacific Islanders in Washington State, and strengthen our advocacy and education so that Washington State can truly be an open, inclusive, future-oriented state where all community members can live in peace.
