YLI Overview

The Youth Leadership Institute (YLI) is a program instituted by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. YLI promotes healthy independence and personal empowerment for youth ages 11–13. The three “learn by doing” modules cover the following areas:

  • Youth leadership
  • Engagement
  • Success

Self, family, and community are addressed.

Theme

Activity

Module 1: Foundations of Leadership and Success

Theme A: Believing in the Power of Yourself (Growth Mindset)

  • Create a Short Video. Create, edit, and share a series of short 30-second videos (may be used with sound effects, music snippets, and filters) focused on the individual traits of group participants in which each participant presents one of their strengths and one of their challenges.
  •  Create a Skit. In small groups, write a fun skit that can be performed for the larger group. Pick a challenge you or your friends deal with often. First, create a skit where characters respond to the challenge with a negative mindset. Then, create another skit where the character responds with a positive mindset. Feel free to be over-dramatic when creating and performing the skit.

  • Create a T-Shirt. Create a “me tee” (an all-about-me t-shirt) in which you design a t-shirt in a personal and imaginative way, using doodles, words, and/or illustrations to help others learn about you.

  • Create a Poster. Create a poster describing who you are and your journey through the years. Or complete a personality quiz or exercise, then make a poster that creatively shares the results.

Module 1: Foundations Of Leadership And Success

Theme B: Imagining the Future and Its Possibilities (Goal setting)

 • Vision Board. Create a vision board (a physical or digital collage/collection of items such as pictures, magazine clippings, words, and quotes that visually affirm goals and dreams).

• Goal Treasure Map. Draw or paint a goal treasure map (an artistic visualization of steps from start to finish toward a goal with incentives along with key points on the map).

• Escape Room. Visit an escape room (a room in which people are locked in to play a game requiring them to solve a series of puzzles within a certain amount of time and accomplish a goal).

Module 1: Foundations Of Leadership And Success

Theme C: Taking Action in Politics and Societal Issues (Civic & Social Awareness)

• Legislative Challenge. Visit a legislative body (view a state legislature or city council in session or make an office visit to a legislator), visit an executive branch office (i.e., Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Agency Director), emulate a Legislative Session (i.e., role play), or conduct a mock legislative session.

• Emergency Preparedness and Planning. Develop a home emergency response plan to include necessary emergency resources and a storage area for these resources (create a first aid kit) or develop an emergency response plan for the YLI meeting setting and conduct an emergency drill (i.e., evacuation or shelter-in-place).

• Social Activism. Launch or join a campaign (i.e., propose a postage stamp for an important figure; advocate for a building name change or a statute to be taken down; launch a letter-writing campaign or shoot a public service announcement on an issue; design a visual infographic about a topic), hold a youth town hall or march on an issue or for candidates for political office Host a debate on various hot topics (i.e., bullying, music, movies, television, news), or write a “Bill of Rights” for your YLI group.

Module 2: Engagement in Exploration and Self-Expression

Theme A: Exploring Career Options (Career Exploration)

• Career Adventure Challenge. Rotate between various stations to complete tasks or assignments related to various careers or professions. (Guests from each career can be invited to explain the tasks and help youth participants complete each assignment.) Non-traditional and unique professions are encouraged such as engineers, forensic toxicologists, epidemiologists, nurses, medical examiners, anthropologists, astronauts, radiologists, air traffic controllers/pilots, lab technicians, architects, vocational professionals, and the military.

  • STEM/STEAM Discovery. Consider completing an activity or visiting a location related to a STEM/STEAM-related career. Options include The Marshmallow/Spaghetti challenge, which encourages youth to use engineering thinking to create the tower, visit a STEM/ STEAM-related facility, or use technology to complete an art project.

• Entrepreneurial Exploration. Break out into small groups or work individually to develop a business idea. Think about choosing an idea that solves a problem and has a clear path to making money. Present ideas to one another either in groups or individually, then select your favorite entrepreneurial idea.

Module 2: Engagement in Exploration and Self-Expression

Theme B: Discovering Countries and Their Cultures (Cultural Exposure)

  • Cultural Exchange. Have a cross-cultural social gathering with another youth group from a different culture or host a cross-cultural food-tasting activity. Select a country/ geographic area to learn about that culture’s food (this activity might include visiting a restaurant, bakery, or a setting that supports an Exchange).

• International Music Playlist. Create an international music playlist in a genre of interest (this activity might involve creating the playlist in classical, hip-hop/rap, jazz, country, etc., or a combination and presenting music during a session)

• Cultural Dance. Participate in a dance lesson that focuses on the tradition and norms that are important in every culture, which can be represented in dancing and often colorful props and costumes (this activity might involve forming teams to learn and presenting dances during a session)

• Art Exploration. Recreate a piece of art (i.e., painting, sculpture) originally created by an artist from another country (this activity might involve using paint, playdough, and other materials to recreate the piece of art and to present it during a session).

Module 2: Engagement in Exploration and Self-Expression

Theme C: Expressing Your Best Self in Everyday Life (Life Skills Experience)

• Feed a Family Simulation. Plan a dinner meal that costs less than $5/person for a 4-person family. The meal should include a protein, vegetables, a grain, and a beverage. Youth should select the recipe and use grocery shopping websites, food delivery apps, or restaurant menus to cost out ingredients for the meal.

• Physical Fitness, Wellness, and Nutrition Activity. Pick an app to track fitness and diet or participate in a nutritional cooking or exercise class (this activity can be done as a team or individual and discussion during a session).

• Food Critic. Conduct a tasting session of nutritious food items and critique them. This activity can be done as a team or individual and discussion during a session.

• Dress for Success. Put together a fashion show focused on dressing for success to include four types of corporate dress codes: business formal, business professional, business casual, and casual.

Theme B: Planting for the Planet (Environmental Project)

• Environmental Project. Youth will participate in a youth-led group environment project that focuses on their collective ability to improve and protect the environment at scale by planting at least one tree. Additional environmental activities are encouraged (i.e., plant flowers at school or park, take care of them, or support a community garden).

Module 3: Using the Power of Purpose to Drive Success

Theme C: Sharing Our Experience with the World (Final Presentation)

• Final Presentation. Youth will participate in documenting their YLI journey and lessons learned through a presentation or video. This activity may include using PowerPoint, Google Slides, their cell phone camera, a video camera, or computer program to capture their leadership discovery.
