Dance Protest List June-July 2020_Park

October 1, 2020

Welcome to anyone viewing this doc for the first time and welcome to anyone returning. You will notice that the last entry is at the end of July. This is not to say that more dance at protest did not continue. At that moment, I redirected my organizing to two different activations:

  1. Street Dance Activism’s 28-Day Global Dance Meditation:

“Embodied meditation & movement sessions led by Black, Indigenous, People of Color + Queer guides from multiple wisdom traditions and healing practices.

All bodies welcome. We ask everyone to take part in the universal shift that only comes with true Black liberation. This offering is intergenerational and embracing all abilities.

Black liberation is your liberation and your liberation is Black liberation.

By reading these words you are already vibrating with us.

The journey has begun.”

  1. The ReadIn Series: The ReadIn Series is a collective action by performers and scholars to create access to profoundly important books about American history and culture. Over 30 actors from stage and screen have given their time to voice W.E.B. Du Bois’ Black Reconstruction in America which we air via YouTube Premiere beginning on the March on Washington 8/28 and culminating on Election Day 11/3. This act was conceived in the tradition of a reading marathon as educational activism. Please follow @TheReadInSeries to participate in this action.

In the struggle,

MiRi

This doc is collating instances of protest that have occurred in response to the current moment, to be more specific, within the last 10-11 days since the first protest began in MN on 5/26/20. These instances of protest can be on the street AT the protests, or things like people flooding police apps to upload footage of violence with Kpop videos/fancams, or choreographed pieces in direct response to the moment like Jakevis Thomason’s piece.

The only section on here that is not specifically about this moment is “Background Reading.” This section includes essays, articles, and books by or about critical dance scholars who research protests and movement, for those who are curious about how to think and write about this.

I hope this helps to clarify what this doc seeks to do.

If you plan on using this information in any kind of way or  has been of any assistance, and you would like to recognize the labor I’ve put into this, please consider donating to one of the following organizations. (I’m not financially able to give at the moment, so this would mean a lot!)

June 4, 2020

Hi fellow dancers, dance enthusiasts, dance scholars, and dance lovers who are protesting or bearing witness~

I’m compiling this list of dance and protest during the moment of current uprisings in response to the recent police murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, and the #BlackLivesMatter anti-racism movement. This is a crowd-sourced list that is open and available to any and all who would like to reference it for scholarship, or for examples of how other organizers are protesting with dance.

I will also add information for protests that plan on including dance as the center of their activism.

Please submit links to footage or articles here: https://forms.gle/SYU2NGdmVGf7e4sTA

Articles reporting on music and dance at protests

Legal Precedents re: Dance as Protest

  • Justia Opinion Summary: Appellant filed a suit against appellees, including the police officer that arrested her, alleging violations of her First and Fourth Amendment rights where the officer arrested her when she refused to stop what she described as "silent expressive dancing" inside the Jefferson Memorial. At issue was whether the district court properly dismissed appellant's complaint for failure to state a claim. The court affirmed the dismissal and held that appellant was lawfully arrested for violating the reasonable regulations that govern the Jefferson Memorial, a nonpublic forum reserved for the tranquil commemoration of Mr. Jefferson's legacy, and that the officer had probable cause to make the arrest and used reasonable force to subdue her without injury after she twice refused his lawful orders.
