Cognitive Functions; Simplified

I will be including the MBTI cognitive descriptions from Gifts Differing. It will be underlined. After that, it will be followed by the same cognitive function except it is in bold. The bold parts are how I see cognitive functions. Hopefully it is understandable and helps.

Extroverted Thinking:

-Is fed from objective data - facts and borrowed ideas.

-Depends upon the facts of experience and regards the abstract idea of unsubstantial and of negligible importance.

-Relies of facts outside of the thinker, which are more decisive than the thinking itself, for soundness and value.

-Has at its goal, the solution of practical problems, discovery, and classification of facts, criticism and modification of generally accepted ideas, planning and programs, and developing of formulas.

-Dwells upon the details of the concrete case, including irrelevancies.

-Has a tendency of multiplying facts until their meaning is smothered and thinking paralyzed.

-Consists of a succession of concrete representations that are set in motion not so much by an inner thought activity as by the changing stream of sense perceptions.

Extroverted Thinking:

-Understands things based on facts and borrowed ideas.

-What is true is more reliable compared to what can happen. For example, a high Te user will rely on what is true to happen rather than what they hope can happen. The ‘what if’ comes after ‘what will.’

-Relies on facts, which is more decisive because it is true and holds objective value.

-Has as its goal, practical solution - one that is easy and correct at the same time, discovery, classification of facts, criticizing the way things are, planning to change things to how they want it.. Or rather how they believe it should be, and develop the way things happen/should happen.

-Focuses on everything that is actually there, including things that can be seen as useless. ‘Everything that is actually there’ including facts, physical information like objects, websites, documents, files, etc. etc.

-Will keep learning every part of their interest, the negative and the positive, until they are no longer able to learn more.

-What keeps them ‘true’ and ‘reliable’ is their concrete evidence, they have evidence. Not their own thought up explanations, this is a difference in Ti and Te.

Introverted Thinking:

-Is fed from subjective and unconscious roots - archetypes.

-Depends upon the abstract idea as the decisive factor, and values facts chiefly as illustrative proofs of the idea.

-Relies on the thinker’s powers of observation and appreciation and use of their inner wealth of inherited experience for soundness and value.

-Has at its goal formulating questions, creating theories, opening up prospects, yielding insight, and finally, seeing how external facts fit into the framework of the idea or theory it has created.

-Seizes upon the similarities of the concrete case, dismissing irrelevancies.

-Has a tendency to neglect facts or coerce them into agreement with the idea.

-Consists of inner thought activity, tied loosely if at all to the stream of sense impressions, which are dimmed by the vividness of the stream of inner impression.

Introverted Thinking:

-Thoughts are created subjectively and can be unexplainable.

-Depends upon their idea as the decisive factor, even without facts or proof. Only values facts as proof of their idea, if it doesn’t help as proof then it is ignored.

-Relies upon the thinker’s ability to process and take information as their own person, relying on being able to think deeply. Trusting their thoughts for these reasons.

-Has as its goal: questioning things, creating speculations, opening up different views, understanding deeper, and seeing how facts fit into their chain of thoughts.

-Looks for the similarities between their thought and the concrete evidence, dismissing things that are of no use to them.

-Has a tendency to use facts in convenience to their ideas. For example, including facts only if it helps explain their thoughts.

-Consists of inner thought activity, working with concepts they’ve created, which are not connected with what can be seen. As such, they are not viewed so positively by people who trust concrete information.

Extroverted feeling:

-Is determined chiefly by the objective factor and serves to make the individual feel correctly, under all circumstances.

-Adapts the individual to the objective situation.

-Depends upon wholly the ideals, conventions, and customs of the environment, and is extensive rather than deep.

-Finds soundness and value outside of the individual in the collective ideals of the community, which are usually accepted without question.

-Has as its goal the formation and maintenance of easy and harmonious emotional relationships with other people.

-Expresses itself easily and so shares itself with others, creating and arousing similar feelings and establishing warm sympathy and understanding.

-Has a tendency to suppress the personal standpoint entirely, and presents the danger of becoming a feeling personality, giving the effect of insincerity and pose.

Extroverted Feeling:

-Is determined by the objective factor and makes sure the Fe user feels correctly, conventionally. Objective factor being what happened, the subjective factor is how they feel it happened.

-Makes sure the Fe user changes to fit into what’s happening. If the mood is sad then they will change to fit that mood.

-Depends upon the usual feelings of people and is a lot but not deep. For example, Fe’s feelings can be like splattered paint and Fi’s feelings can be like a recurring circle pattern that never ends. I’ll attach an image to show what I mean but this is not the most significant part.

-Finds soundness and value outside of the Fe user, the values of the community they are in, are accepted and usually without question. The values of the community become their values and the Fe user finds soundness in this.

-Has as its goal harmonious emotional relationships and easily maintaining it.

-Expresses itself easily and because of that, creates an environment where they are influencing the emotions. When an Fe user is being expressive and happy, it brings the mood up and affects others in their group. This helps with establishing an understanding and sympathy.

-Has a tendency to suppress their own viewpoint entirely. This can make them seem fake even though they are not.

Introverted Feeling:

-Is determined chiefly by the subjective factor and serves as a guide to the emotional acceptance or rejection of various aspects of life.

-Adapts the objective situation to the individual by the simple process of excluding or ignoring the unacceptable.

-Depends upon the abstract feeling - ideals such as love, and loyalty, and is deep and passionate rather than extensive.

-Finds soundness and value inside oneself from one's own inner wealth and powers of appreciation and abstraction.

-Has as its goal the fostering and protection of an intense inner emotional life, and, so far as possible, the outer fulfillment and realization of the inner ideal.

-May be too overpowering to be expressed at all, creating a false appearance of coldness to the point of indifference, and may be completely misunderstood.

-Has a tendency to find no objective fulfillment or realization - or outlet - for expression, and presents the danger of living upon sentiment, illusion, and self pity.

Introverted Feeling:

-What actually happened is based on what they believe happened, therefore it is subjective. This leads to their rejection or acceptance of parts in life. If they reject something, it can be because of their subjective view of what happened.

-Adapts the objective situation of the individual by ignoring what they dislike/what’s unacceptable to them.

-Depends on abstract feelings like love and loyalty, it is one deep emotion rather than a small amount of each emotion. I’ll show the picture at the end of the feeling cognitive functions.

-Finds values in itself because of the inner wealth it has. Being able to decide what they appreciate and value for themself.

-Because its goal is to have a deep inner emotional life, it still needs outer fulfillment. This is because they have a realization of their inner ideal.

-May be too overpowering to express, which causes things like miscommunication and they can be misunderstood (as cold).

-Has a tendency to find no fulfillment for expression because of these reasons above and shows us the danger of living upon illusion and self pity.

Here is the image of Fe: extensive rather than deep.

And now Fi: deep rather than extensive.

Extroverted Sensing:

-Suppresses as far as possible the subjective element of the sense impression.

-Values the object sensed rather than the subjective impression ,of which the individual may be hardly aware.

-Sees things photographically, the impression being one of concrete reality and nothing more. The “primrose by a river's brim” is simply a  primrose.

-Leads to concrete enjoyment, seizing very fully the momentary and manifest existence of things, and that only.

-Develops attention that is riveted by the strongest stimulus, which invariably becomes the center of interest, so that life seems wholly under the influence of accidental outer happenings.

-Develops a pleasure-loving outer self, very rich and undigested experience and unclassified knowledge of uninterpreted facts.

-Must be balanced by introverting judgment, or it makes a shallow, wholly empirical personality, with many superstitions and no morality except collective conventions and taboos.

Extroverted Sensing:

-Tries to see things as it really is, without judgment of what they think it is. A water bottle is a water bottle, not who it belongs to or what it can be used for.

-Values the object for what it is, without personal attachment.

-Sees things as if it were just another moment. A setting in a book is just another place, nothing more nothing less.

-Leads to enjoyment in what can be experienced with the 5 senses and that only.

-Develops attention that is driven by what seems most expressive in their life, and because of that, life can begin to seem like it’s under the influence of coincidences that cater towards them.

-Develops a pleasure-loving view of the outer world, they have many experiences because of it. However, the experiences don’t get classified as information (to learn from) and such.

-This part is part of the Grant stack which doesn’t need to be mentioned. Myers tells us that Se dominant must be followed by Ti or Fi to keep it ‘balanced and happy,’ which is not true. Se can be followed by Fi, Ti, Te, or Fe.

Introverted Sensing:

-Suppressed as far as possible the objective element of the sense impression.

-Values the subjective impression released by the object rather than the object itself, of which the individual may be hardly aware.

-Sees things highly colored by the subjective factor, the impression being merely suggested by the object and coming out of the unconscious in the form of some meaning or significance.

-Leads to ideas through the activations of archetypes, seizing the background of the physical world rather than its surface.

-Develops attention that is very selective, guided wholly by the inner constellation of interests, so that it is impossible to predict what outer stimulus will catch and hold attention.

-Develops an extremely eccentric and individual inner self, which sees things other people do not see, and may appear very irrational.

-Must be balanced by extrovert judgment, or it makes a silent, inaccessible personality, wholly uncommunicative, with no conversation except conventional banalities about the weather and other collective interests.

Introverted Sensation:

-Doesn't like to see objects how they are, like to have an impression on them. This would mean art isn't just art, it has meaning. Suppressing the objective element is suppressing the real elements.

-Like what the object seems like rather than it just being an object. The ppl who use Si aren't always aware of them doing this.

-The object again has meaning and meaning that is made because of the person. It's not the actual meaning but more like projection. In which, Si would see it as pretty much the actual meaning.

-Leads to ideas based on archetypes, which are, “defined as images and themes that derive from the collective unconscious, as proposed by Carl Jung. Archetypes have universal meanings across cultures and may show up in dreams, literature, art or religion.” (https://www.simplypsychology.org/carl-jung.html#:~:text=Jungian%20archetypes%20are%20defined%20as,%2C%20literature%2C%20art%20or%20religion.) The background of the physical world may be like seeing a water bottle as theirs or what it’s supposed to be used for, while seeing the physical world as it is may be just seeing it as a water bottle.

-Only pays attention to things that interest them. It is guided by what happens in their head and how they see things rather than what is true and how it actually is so it is hard to guess what will interest them next.

-Their view is really individualized and others are not able to view it the way they do so they appear irrational.

-Again, this isn’t useful. Myers believes Si dominants must have Te or Fe auxiliary to be ‘normal.’ (When really you can be SiTi and SiFi along with SiTe and SiFe.)

Extroverted Intuition:

-Uses the inner understanding in the interests of the objective situation.

-Regards the immediate situation as a prison from which escape is urgently necessary and aims to escape my means of some sweeping change in the objective situation.

-Is wholly directed upon outer objects, searching for emerging possibilities, and will sacrifice all else for possibilities when found.

-May be artistic, scientific, mechanical, inventive, industrial, commercial, social, political, or adventurous.

-Finds self-expression natural and easy.

-Finds its greatest value in the promotion and initiation of new ideas.

-Requires the development of balancing judgment not only for the criticism and evaluation of the intuitive enthusiasm but also to hold it to the completion of its various activities.

Extroverted Intuition:

-Uses own understanding to solve new issues; the problems in front of them.

-Escapes the present by changing something in the environment, like causing a new event to occur.

-Can rely on objects around it for possibilities and will do anything for these possibilities. (Extra note: this can include ignoring their own safety along with others, the consequences.)

-These next 3 are easy but for an elaboration on the 3rd one out of these, values new ideas and values actually creating these ideas.

-Needs judging functions (Fe, Fi, Te, Ti) to actually decide what to do. So NeTi, NeFi, NeFe, and NeTe.

Introverted Intuition:

-Uses the objective situation in the interests of inner understanding.

-Regards the immediate situation as a prison from which escape is necessary and aims to escape through some sweeping change in the subjective understanding of the objective situation.

-Receives its impetus from outer objects but is never arrested by external possibilities, being occupied rather by searching out new angles for viewing and understanding life.

-May be creative in any field: artistic, literary, scientific, inventive, philosophical, or religious.

-Finds self-expression difficult.

-Finds its greatest value lies in the interpretation of life and the promotion of understanding.

-Requires the development of balancing judgment not only for the criticism and evaluation of intuitive understanding but to enable it to impart its visions to others and bring them to practical usefulness to the world.

Both (Ne and Ni) are characterized by habitual expectancy; both have quick understanding.

Introverted intuition:

-Uses what's currently happening in the physical world as a way to learn and use it for life.

-When it doesnt like what's happening physically, it changes its perspective easily. Like making it meaningful, a lesson, or an inspiration.

-Thinks about life's meaning because of what's happening around it. Like the things that happen in the environment influences how they find the meaning to life. BUT it is not limited to the environment it's currently in.

-The next 2 are easy to understand, about jobs and how expressive a high Ni user is.

-Its greatest value is interpreting life and understanding.

-The last one is about how it's supposed to have Ti, Fi, Te, or Fe to make judgments and come to conclusions.

EXTRA INFO!

If you are wondering what the Grant stack is or why it shouldn’t be used, I have another document on it; which can be found on my linktree, instagram account, or tiktok account. My instagram and tiktok share the username of ‘Spammmyummy.’ (I also have info on why not all MBTI and ennea combos are possible. Those two systems are not the only one contradictions are found in though.)

I don’t recommend you share this document to someone who is new to MBTI since I do not explain how to self type, but if someone is simply looking for cognitive functions then this should help. Thank you for reading!
