Open Letter on Anti-Trans Events

Dear Professor Julie Sanders, Vice Chancellor and Principal and Andrew Boggs, University Secretary,

As LGBTQ+ members of the academic community at Royal Holloway and concerned allies, we are writing to express our profound objection to events being held on campus by academic staff that advocate “scepticism” towards our trans colleagues and students.

On Wednesday 21st May, Neil Gascoigne held a talk on Egham Campus titled “Changing Sex: Trans-Scepticism and the Non-Binary Attitude”, in the abstract for which he sets out his intention to argue against positions such as that trans women are “real” women. As researchers, including feminist researchers and researchers of gender and sexuality, we may object to Dr Gascoigne’s ontological position on sex or what a “real” woman is. However, our academic critique of Dr Gascoigne’s argument is less important than the fact that hosting such events on campus contributes to an environment of hostility towards trans people. Given the recent Supreme Court ruling, which organisations such as Human Rights Watch and the Good Law Project have argued threatens the rights of trans and intersex people, and the widespread culture of violence against trans people in the UK, the college should be a place of safety for our trans colleagues and students.

We would hope that the college would not allow events that advocated “scepticism” towards other minoritised groups to take place on campus and oppose the idea that trans people should be treated with any less respect and dignity. While Dr Gascoigne and his defenders may declare their right to free speech and that so-called “gender critical” views are protected, we would strenuously argue that the college should hold itself to higher standards than promoting speech that is legal but hateful and discriminatory. As teachers, we have a duty of care towards students and hosting talks that deny the identities of some of those students is in clear violation of that duty.

The attempt to position a campaign against rights and freedoms as serious academic enquiry is shameful and undermines the college’s reputation for rigorous research. It not only harms the academic standard of the research conducted at the college as a whole, it also explicitly undermines the rigorous research conducted by feminist and gender scholars across the college. We note that Dr Gascoigne’s talk was only circulated to staff and students in Philosophy, rather than to his entire department of Politics, International Relations and Philosophy. While there are of course events that are more tailored to philosophers, we also reject the implication that the content of this talk is not inherently political.

While we encourage signatures from anyone who similarly objects to transphobia (despite Dr Gascoigne’s attempts to distinguish his work as trans-sceptical, we see no reason not to characterise it as transphobic), the original authors of this letter are cis women. We vehemently reject Dr Gascoigne’s attempts to speak “for” us or in our “defence”. We do not need defending from trans people. Trans rights do not diminish our own but help to mitigate the harm perpetrated against all minoritised genders by patriarchy. Battling ideas of “biology” as destiny is a core tenet of feminism and helps pursue the liberation of all.

We call on the college to recognize the harmful effects of events like the one mentioned above and to no longer permit events promoting anti-trans views on campus.
