9 to 5: THE MUSICAL AUDITION PACKET

Thank you for your interest in auditioning for the St. Joseph production of 9 to 5: The Musical. Please read through this packet to prepare yourself for the audition.

Regular auditions for our Fall Musical, 9 to 5, will be held Thursday & Friday August 27th. and 28thth in Saint Joseph’s MPB. Ladies’ auditions will begin at 12:30pm and end by 3pm.

Gentlemen's auditions will begin at 3pm and end by 5:30pm.

Actors auditioning for 9 to 5 will have to attend 1 of the 2 days of regular auditions. Actors must choose at least 1 character from the character list below and familiarize themselves with the solo and side assigned to that character. Please see the Character Descriptions section below to become familiar with the characters. Notes** We will take time in auditions to briefly review each song together. The sides don’t have to be memorized, but actors should be comfortable with the piece and bring their own characterization to the reading. Time allowing, actors should be able to audition for as many roles as they want.

We will have open auditions – no need to sign up ahead of time. Upon arrival, you will be asked to fill out an Audition Contract (see here) Please arrive on time, as we will audition one role at a time after a brief warmup. Actors are not required to stay for the entire time, but are welcome to. We are not holding a dance call, but please wear clothes you can move comfortably in!

Callbacks for all actors will be held on Monday, August 31st in the MPB from 3:00pm-DONE. Please check your email prior, as the callback list will be sent out by Saturday morning August 29th, and will contain new songs & sides. *Note: you could be called back for a role you didn’t audition for whether you put it down on your Audition Contract or not. Get familiar with the characters of the show as much as possible & get familiar with the score of the show as much as possible! **If you don’t get a callback that does not mean you’re not in the show!

Rehearsals begin immediately on September 1, and continue through November 12. Most rehearsals will be Monday-Friday 3:00-6:00, with some later dates going longer. There will be at least 1 all-day Saturday rehearsal, 11/07, to start off tech week (there could be more if we need them.) Show dates are November 13, 14, 15, 20 & 21. CREW – We are looking for Assistant Stage Managers, Sound, Lighting & Stage Crews, Set & Prop Designers, Costume, Hair & Makeup Crews. Please keep an eye out for a crew interest meeting the week of August 31.

9 to 5: The Musical description:

Pushed to the boiling point, three female coworkers concoct a plan to get even with the sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot they call their boss. In a hilarious turn of events, Violet, Judy and Doralee live out their wildest dream – giving their boss the boot! While Hart remains "otherwise engaged," the women give their workplace a dream makeover, taking control of the company that had always kept them down.

Character Breakdown:

VIOLET NEWSTEAD

Violet is a smart, efficient, widowed, working mother of a teenage son who is constantly being passed up for promotion in the boys’-club world of climbing the corporate ladder. She runs the office from her desk while her boss takes the credit. She is frustrated with her position, but not bitter. Witty, strong, ambitious. Female, Alto (F3-D5).

DORALEE RHODES

Doralee Rhodes is a warm and personable country gal who is the secretary for the boss, Franklin Hart – this character is the ‘Dolly Parton’ of the piece – with a country accent and singing. She is misunderstood at the beginning, but comes to be a strong cog in the machine that destroys Hart. Comedy is sharp and no-nonsense. Female, Soprano (G3-E5)

JUDY BERNLY

The “new” girl at the firm, she has been burned by her husband’s affair and is searching for personal empowerment. A bit insecure, proper, determined, and hopeful–Judy changes throughout the play into a force to be reckoned with. Female, Mezzo-soprano (Ab3-F5)

FRANKLIN HART

One of the firm’s executives and a notorious chauvinist. He is capable of faking charm but usually shows his true colors as an arrogant, self-absorbed boss. Male, Baritone (Gb4-C3)

ROZ KEITH

The attentive office gossip queen and snitch. She has an unrequited love for Mr. Hart and will do anything she can to win his approval. Over the top comedic role. Female, Alto (C5-G3)

JOE

Charming young office accountant. Genuine and nice, and smitten with Violet. Male, Tenor (G4-B2)

DWAYNE RHODES

Doralee’s country husband, he is very supportive of her professional pursuits. Male, Tenor (G4-E3)

DICK BERNLY

Judy’s soon-to-be ex-husband. An average guy, he is sporting a little less hair and a little more paunch than he did ten years ago. Male

JOSH NEWSTEAD

Violet’s awkward teenage son. Male or Female

KATHY

A secretary in Hart’s office with a tendency to gossip. Female, Mezzo (G4-D5)

MARGARET

A secretary in Hart’s office with a tendency to drink. Female

MARIA

A young and vibrant secretary in Hart’s office. Female, Alto (F4-D5)

MISSY HART

Franklin Hart’s wife, clueless to her husband’s true nature. Female

TINSWORTHY

Franklin Hart’s boss and Chairman of the Board. A good man, who may be wiser to Hart’s ways than he lets on. Male

Great character types and/or strong singer-actor-dancers who will fill out the rest of this wacky world as office employees, police officers, and hospital employees.
