Tasmanian Youth Parliament 2026 Role Descriptions
This guide provides an overview of the kind of roles available on the 2026 Tasmanian Youth Parliament Taskforce, along with a suggestion of the time commitments involved with each. If you have any questions about the roles, feel free to contact us! We will also explain them in more detail + give the appropriate resources to help you undertake the role once the Taskforce has been chosen and roles have been allocated.
Overall, we plan on having fortnightly/weekly meetings online (the frequency increasing as we get closer to the conference) that will run for about an hour to check-in with all Taskforce members and keep everyone in the loop. Usually, you will be expected to do around an hour of outside and individual work regarding your chosen role.
Recruitment Officer (x2)
This role focuses on two key aspects, and is a key role in the taskforce:
- Leads recruitment - contacting schools, youth organisations, councils, YMCA contacts, politicians with info about the conference, dates for registration, etc.
- Leads sponsorship - helps participants get in contact with local members to receive sponsorship! This is super important, and we would like to focus more on this this year to ensure that the conference is as accessible to as many people as possible!
- This is estimated to be 2-4 hours per week, with the majority of the workload towards the beginning of the organising process, around February-April, this is our main recruitment period.
- This role is best suited to someone who is organised, able to liaise with schools, community groups and contacts to lead the recruitment process and is happy to send and respond to many, many emails.
Advocacy Officer (x1)
- Coordinates advocacy sessions during the conference, these sessions usually consist of rotating groups that talk about their ideas in regards to state policy issues that they have identified. Coordinating these includes deciding on the topics of conversations, coming up with questions to create conversations, and facilitate problem solving.
- Does extra stuff with advocacy post YP, figures out how to turn advocacy sessions into letters/submissions/better stuff to send off to stakeholders, politicians, anyone relevant.
- This is estimated to be a time commitment of 2 hours per week, but the responsibilities of the role do continue for a short time after the conference.
- We’d really like to focus more on the advocacy aspect of the conference in 2026, so if you’re interested in activism, advocacy and helping young people share their ideas, this would be a great role for you!
Sponsorships Officer (x2)
- This role is responsible for creating the 2026 prospectus, contacting politicians, community groups, and businesses about sponsoring the conference/ participants.
- You will also be responsible for tracking these sponsorship/bursary donations, matching sponsored places to eligible participants and chasing up any unpaid invoices from sponsors (this tends to happen more than we would like).
- This role is key to the functioning of the conference, as the grant money can only stretch so far and being able to freely allocate financial aid to participate is key to ensuring that the conference remains accessible for participants and financially viable into the future.
- This role is best suited to someone organised, responsible, proactive and comfortable with sending/responding to emails in a timely fashion.
Media Officer (x1)
- This role is best suited to someone familiar with Facebook, Instagram, graphics platforms such as Canva and social media management more generally. The aim of this role is to engage with the public, politicians and prospective participants about the 2026 conference; spreading information, aiding recruitment and generating excitement! Utilising both traditional (newspapers, radio stations, television stations) and social media, before, during, and after conference.

- You will be responsible for:
- Working with convenors to run pre-conference drafting days with the participants: explaining the function of bills, how to write them and why they are important.
- Leading editing and formatting of bills before conference (This can be delegated throughout the taskforce, as it can be quite a large undertaking)
- Leading ‘bill chats’ during the week of debate, where participants come up with amendments for their bills
- Keeping record of the passed amendments to bills, whether bills pass or fail during the week of debate.
- Ensuring that bills are reformatted with passed amendments after the debates conclude to be presented to relevant ministers/ published etc after the conference.

- This role is responsible for the organising of two speakers panels held during the conference with guest speakers from the community.
- This involves contacting and liaising with prospective speakers on a semi-regular basis (being responsive to emails is a key aspect of this role), deciding on questions for the panel, facilitating the panels during the conference. You will work closely with the education officer and the convenors on this.

- It is important to note that this role is ‘on call’ for the duration of the conference, so you may keep somewhat irregular hours. This role may be undertaken in conjunction with other roles.
Crisis Workshop Creator (x2)
- This role is best suited to someone creative, that would like to create a fictional scenario (think something along the lines of a 4-5 hour long dnd campaign!) where the participants split into groups to respond to the events within the fictional scenario.
- You will also become the ‘crisis master’ for the crisis workshop, coordinating the responses to groups actions and the deciding the outcome of the fictional scenario.
- This role doesn’t have an estimated time per week, as you may spend as much time on this task as you like! This may be undertaken in conjunction with other roles.
Workshop Creator (open to everyone)
- This role may be undertaken in conjunction with other roles, and focuses on creating an educational workshop to deliver for participants during the week!
