It’s a messed up reality to be raised in tradition or certain culture and never really break away from it, even when you reach adulthood. When you can (and should) be able to make your own decisions in life. That somehow, some way it forces you to follow these traditions as if it’s gonna make your life miserable if you don’t. That it’s the end-all-be-all. Nowadays (and even in the past I guess), you can compare it to the pressure of social media. Consumerism and the constant search for the things that will make you happy; by looking at what advertisers and general media portrayed as the requirements for happiness.
This thoughts comes to mind after watching the series finale of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, to where one of the characters (Rosa) utter this;
“...you all think for someone to be happy, their story has to end with marriage and kids.”
It was subtle, but it’s deep and relevant in our society right now. Maybe forty, fifty years ago it’s the norm, but not anymore. Breakups and divorces happen, why? Sure we can downplay breakups, but divorces are basically just breakups on steroids. A part of me is glad that we now live in a world where marriage and kids might not be for everyone, and that’s ok. And if you change your mind over time, that’s ok too.
We don’t need other means of pressure, we already have too much as it is.
