What has happened

Hurricane Beryl, a Category 4 hurricane, passed through the southern Caribbean islands on July 1st, hitting Grenada and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines especially badly.

The eye hit passed through the Grenadine islands of Mayreau, Canouan, Union Island (Vincentian territories) and Carriacou, Petit Martinique and Petit St Vincent (Grenadian territories) between roughly 10am and 1pm on July 1st. Winds reached up to 220km/h.

The destruction was catastrophic to both Vincentians and Grenadians.

90% of the buildings on Union Island, Carriacou and Petite Martinique were destroyed.

We are waiting for official reports back from Mayreau and Canouan, but we are hearing that the destruction is similar.

1500 Vincentians evacuated to sheltersΒ including children and the elderly.

As of writing this document on Wednesday, July 3rd, many people in both the Grenadines and on the Vincentian mainland do not have water, electricity or cell phone service.

Estimates are predicting that basic infrastructure like electricity will be down for up to two weeks.

Locals describe the experience as β€˜purgatory’,Β β€˜post-apocalyptic’, β€˜going back to the Stone Age’, β€˜the worst hurricane I have ever experienced’.

Another tropical depression is passing through the island on Wednesday July 3rd.

The history of the hurricane can be tracked in great detail at https://zoom.earth/storms/beryl-2024. (sourced: Hurricane Beryl Relief Funds and Drives: St Vincent and the Grenadines)

Gofundme link: Help Godstand Rebuild Carriacou After Hurricane

As High Commissioner for Grenada, I extend my heartfelt thanks for your continued support to Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique. Your contributions during Hurricane Ivan in 2004 and the Covid-19 pandemic are testament to the unwavering support we have across our islands and in the Caribbean diaspora.

Hurricane Beryl, a Category 4 hurricane, has severely damaged homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods, across our tri-island state especially in Carriacou and Petite Martinique. We urgently need your help.

We are seeking your assistance with donating to the Grenada Disaster Relief Fund at Lloyds Bank to aid our recovery efforts. Every contribution, no matter how small, is crucial and will impact critical activity on the ground.

All funds raised on GoFundMe will go directly into Grenada Disaster Relief Fund minus a transaction fee of 2.9% + 25p

Gofundme link: Help Rebuild Grenada, Carriacou & PM: Hurricane Relief Fund

In the wake of Hurricane Beryl, the tri-island state of Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique has been severely impacted. Torrential rains, devastating winds, and extensive flooding have left many communities in crisis. Homes have been destroyed, essential infrastructure has been damaged, and thousands are without power and basic necessities.

Particularly hard-hit were the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique. Carriacou has sustained devastating damage, with numerous homes and businesses suffering severe structural harm. Petite Martinique has been left in dire straits, with no houses remaining intact. The need for immediate relief and long-term rebuilding is urgent and critical.

We are launching this GoFundMe campaign to provide urgent relief and support to those affected by this disaster. Our goal is to raise funds to assist with emergency services, food and water distribution, temporary shelter, and the rebuilding of homes and critical infrastructure.

All proceeds from this campaign will go directly towards relief efforts.

We are a non-profit initiative dedicated to ensuring that every dollar raised helps those in need. Your generous donations will make a significant difference in the lives of the people of Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique as they begin the process of recovery and rebuilding.

Please join us in supporting our Caribbean neighbors during this challenging time. Every contribution, no matter how small, can make a meaningful impact. Together, we can help these resilient communities get back on their feet.

Thank you for your support and compassion.

Carriacou Residents’ Survival Stories

Gofundme Link: Urgent Relief for Grenada, Carriacou & Petite Martinique

On 1 July, the eye of Hurricane Beryl bore down on two tiny islands in the Eastern Caribbean - Carriacou is 13 square miles with a population of 5,000 and Petite Martinique is 0.92 square miles with a population of approx. 600. The devastation is unimaginable with 80% of housing stock and businesses destroyed. There is no running water, power is intermittent, and the mobile cell towers are down so little or no communication. Food will quickly become scarce and health hangs in the balance with no running water and overflowing septic tanks.

I am Dawn De Coteau and I am the President of the Marine and Yachting Association of Grenada. Along with the rest of the board members of MAYAG, we are requesting your URGENT assistance to help the people on Carriacou and Petite Martinique through these critical days after the storm.

The video above shows only part of the devastation. The videographer has said he will fly his drone over other areas of the island. I will post those once he does.

This is real. This is devastating. These people need your help and assistance. MAYAG would love to raise Β£50,000 so we can arrange to purchase much-needed supplies from the UK and ship them over. We have teams in the UK and the USA which will organise this and we can receive the goods on the island and make sure they get to the right peopleβ€”the people most in need.

Any donations you can give, however small, will make a difference. THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts and from everyone on Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

HURRICANE BERYL RELIEF

As most of you know, the early season, catastrophic hurricane Beryl has devastated our southern neighbors. Reports from Carriacou, Petite Martinique, and most populated islands in the Grenadines are stating 98% of homes are damaged or destroyed. Β Countless islanders are homeless. With too many GoFundMe efforts making it difficult to know where to send donations, Mike and I have decided to again create wish lists on Amazon and Walmart based on the reported needs from the islands and from our experiences with the hurricanes that devastated our region in 2017. Already several sailing vessels in the Virgin Islands have offered to carry supplies south.

Please find links to the wishlists below. Β These lists are meant to be guidelines. If you have or want to purchase like items on the list that’s fine! Β I will be adding to or updating the lists as we go based on what we hear from reports down island. Β  I’ve included small items for less than $2 - feel free to buy cases of those items. The main point is, ANYTHING you can offer is needed and appreciated. Our home is close to Frederiksted Pier and we can coordinate deliveries to trusted cruisers easily.

Should you wish to mail from your own supplies or purchase locally and ship yourselves, please mail via US Post Office to:
