Dear [MSP Name],
I am writing to you as a concerned [parent/member of the public] in your constituency. I am extremely worried about the increasing instability in Scotland’s schools caused by the lack of permanent contracts for qualified teachers.
Every year, thousands of fully trained teachers are working on short term or zero hour contracts. Many are placed on supply lists, often not by choice, with no guaranteed work and no stable income. They move between schools constantly, unable to settle or build long term relationships with pupils or staff. Some teachers have worked in over 40 schools in just a few years.
This has a direct impact on children. Pupils lose trusted adults. Learning is disrupted. Support becomes inconsistent. It affects behaviour, wellbeing and academic progress. I have seen the effects of this first hand, and it is not fair on pupils or teachers.
The Scottish Parliament recently voted through A New Deal for Scotland’s Teaching Workforce on 28 May. I believe Scottish Teachers for Permanence, a campaign made up of over 4,000 teachers affected by this issue, should be part of shaping that new deal. They are the ones living through this. Their voices must be heard if any real change is to happen.
Please do not accept the repeated excuse that this is only a matter for local authorities. If teachers are struggling and pupils are being affected, then it is everyone’s responsibility to fix it.
I am asking you to speak up about this issue in Parliament and to work for a national strategy that delivers proper job security and staffing stability in our schools.
Thank you for your time. I look forward to hearing where you stand on this.
Yours sincerely,
