Reference Librarianship & Justice Virtual Discussion Group

Winter/Spring 2020

Welcome!

Thank you for your interest in participating in this virtual discussion group. As a special collections librarian and an archivist who work in reference services, we are excited to be holding a space for librarians, archivists, and other information and cultural heritage workers to come together and discuss this anthology in the context of our own daily work.

Who

This virtual discussion is being organized by:

Pam Hopkins (she/her)

@PSMHopkins

Public Services and Outreach Archivist

Tufts University

Anna Clutterbuck-Cook (she/her)

@feministlib

Reference Librarian

Massachusetts Historical Society

What

The anthology we will be reading is:

Reference Librarianship & Justice: History, Practice & Praxis

Editors: Kate Adler, Ian Beilin, and Eamon Tewell

Publisher: Litwin Press | Price: $35.00. | Published: November 2018

ISBN: 978-1-63400-051-2 | 322 pages

Discussion participants will be responsible for purchasing/borrowing from their favorite library their own copy of the text. We encourage you to pool your resources if you have participating colleagues who can share costs/copies.

When

Weekly discussions for each chapter will be held at three different times throughout the week (see below) to maximize access by all interested participants. We are currently inviting volunteers to sign up to lead the discussion sessions by formulating 3-4 questions about the week's reading and hosting during the conversational hour(s). If you are only available to lead one or two of the three sessions that week, indicate what dates/times you will be available and others can volunteer for the remaining dates/times. We ask that on weeks led by multiple people the volunteers coordinate on the discussion questions. The sign-up sheet may be found here.

  1. Tuesday 3pm EST / 2pm CST / 1pm MST / 12pm PST
  2. Thursday 8pm EST / 7pm CST / 6pm MST / 5pm PST
  3. Saturday 12pm EST / 11am CST / 10am MST / 9am PST

While participants are welcome to attend more than one session per week there is no expectation that anyone except discussion leaders participate more than once; mix and match your session attendance to suit your schedule.
