Wikipedia

Only children are often subject to a stereotype that equates them with spoiled brats in Western countries. G. Stanley Hall was one of the first experts to give only children a bad reputation when he referred to their situation as "a disease in itself."

This quote from the text especially important because I do not agree with what they are saying. Being an only child can’t be a disease not all only children are spoiled brats, due to some research i’ve done some only children like to share and are eager to make friends. I have a friend that is an only child and he is one of the nicest persons I know, he is the complete opposite of the “only child stereotype”.

Stoppard

On the other hand, an only child benefits from being the focus of their parents' attention. They have no immediate competition and probably enjoy more material things too.

This quotation is significant because it gives one specific advantage that only children have over children with siblings. The significance is that only children get attention from both parents all the time, something that a big family siblings don’t get much of.

Macrae

Each child received an average of five nominations – and being an only child did not affect their popularity.

Nor did social class, parents’ age, race or being from a single parent family.

Dr Bobbitt-Zeher said: ‘In every combination we tested, siblings had no impact on how popular a student was among peers.’

This quotation is very significant because its a studied done on students who are only children. Be an only child did not affect the student’s popularity meaning they weren’t having any problems making friends. At this point right now I am truly not buying the “only children are spoiled brats and greedy hogs”. This helped my research a lot because now I results of actual tests that go in favor of my point and question.

Macrae

Previous work by her colleague, Professor Douglas Downey, had found that only children found it hard to make friends on joining kindergarten.

This quotation proves that only children do have problems making friends and being around other children. Although it proves to the “myth” its talking about when only children are joining kindergarten, the only child is still young at this point but he/she will work up and learn how to be sociable.

Sandler

I offer no retort, but if I did, I'd start by asking these young minimum-wage earners to consider the following: the U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that the average child in the U.S. costs his or her parents about $286,050 — before college.

This quotation is special because some parents only have one child because of how much it would cost to raised a child, and thats only one imagen more than one child. Thats one of the biggest reasons why there are a lot of only children out there.
