U.S. Embassy Brussels, Belgium

Security Message for U.S Citizens

Demonstration in Brussels planned for June 17, 2012

On Sunday, June 17, beginning at 11:00, the group “Belgians Against Sharia4Belgium” will stage a protest.  The group will assemble at the Royal Palace, and then march via the Rue de la Régence and the Sablon area to the Place Poelaert (Justice Palace). Police sources have indicated that there is an ongoing movement to organize a counter-protest using Facebook, Twitter, and other electronic means. This counter-protest is being organized by FGTB Youth, a socialist student group. The size of the counter-protest is unknown at this time.

Please note this march is scheduled for Rue de la Régence / Regentschapstraat, and not Boulevard du Régent / Regentlaan, the location of the U.S. Embassy.  The Embassy is situated three blocks north of the Royal Palace.

We remind U.S. citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence.  U.S. citizens are therefore urged to avoid the areas of demonstrations if possibly, and to exercise caution if within the vicinity of any demonstrations.
