A course banner is a banner image and in most courses it appears at the top of the course announcement page (the entry point for your course). You could put any graphic (.jpg or .gif) into the banner space in your course, but if you know how to use an image editing program such as Adobe Fireworks, Photoshop, or SnagIt, you can create your own custom banner incorporating images and text.

Creating a Course Banner

If you're not so confident in your graphic design skills, you might start by using an image creation tool found on the Web at www.flamingtext.com, www.cooltext.com, or www.3dtextmaker.com/. These sites allow you to create your customized text, specify a font and color scheme, and they will generate a .jpg or .gif file for you. Once your image has been created, you will need to download it to your computer and then upload it to your Blackboard course.

When creating your banner you may want to consider the followings:

  • Choose a smaller image size since announcement space is precious and a smaller image will load more quickly.
  • The recommended dimensions are 600-800 pixels by 50-70 pixels.

If your file dimensions are much larger than the above examples, you'll need to resize your banner. This can be done in an image editing program or by using one of the following online tools

Uploading a banner to your Blackboard course

Once you have the graphic you would like to use for you course banner, you are ready to begin.

  1. Scroll down the page to the section labeled Select Banner. Click Browse My Computer to search for the image to attach. Once selected, the image file name should be displayed.
