LiwaywayPhilip-pine Heritage High School Conference on Friday,May13,2CI11 at the University uf Manitoba.

Each year, up to 60 Filipino-Canadian high school students frorn across Winnipeg are invited to participate in youth-lead dialog and discussion on issues faced by Filipino-Canadian youth. The one-day conference concludes

with an evening celebration with community supporters, parents, and guests.

We are pleased to work in partnership with Toronto-based organization, Kapisanan Philippine Centre for Arts and Culture to examine this year’s theme: Sino Kai* Our Filipino-Canadian identity through the Arts.

CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS

Facilitated b§,-'Toronto-based Filipino-Canadian artists from the Kepisanen Philippine Centre for Culture and Arts, the Conference workshops will be divided into the following four break-out sessions in:

PSL: POETRY AS OUR SECOND LANGUFLGE

VISUAL ARTS

Each session will incorporate both traditional and contemporary mediums in both the Tagalog and English languages as tools of empowerment and personal expression. Each session will further underline the importance of cross-cultu ral acceptance and growth through the arts.

He is alsa a professional Filipine felk dancer, having tciureci with clance troupe: in Tcrrpntcr ancl his hcimetuwn nf Eclmpntcin. Backed by Fine Arts ancl Visual C-nmmunication at the University of Alberta and 5 years nf management experience at American Apparel, Jcsclee has leveraged l'Capisanan's c:-nline presence, introducing a lifestyie and image that young Filipino-Canadians can identify with. He has achieved this using his enthusiasm for comrnunication and persistence in content developing. Now a budding entrepreneur, Jodeejust opened his vintage clothing store Pretty Freedom, currentiv housed inside the Kapisanan store-front space.

He combines meclias, integrates vocations, folding together variecl experiences to create a unique experience. His name alone is indicative of this. STUDENT BREAK-QUT SESSIONS Lead bv ANAK volunteers and student mentors, this afternoon long workshop will divide student participants into groups to discuss relevant topics heard during the morning vvorkshops. Students are expected to present their topics during the evening gala before parents and guests.

CONFERENCE CELEBHHTIGN AND GALA An evening celebration, the conference gala will host community supporters, parents, and guests to a fun evening of student presentations., local performances, and dance at the Norwood Hotel 12 Marion Streetjlat 6:30 om.
