You’re Making a Big Mistake, Ivana Wright!: The Musical: The Shot List

A Michael J. Epstein Memorial Library Joint

Please address any questions or complaints to someone who is more awake and less delirious than Rachel.

Abbreviations used in the next few pages: everyone’s initials, plus wide shot / close-up / extreme close-up / mid shot.

Scene 1: These chocolate walls simply won’t work!

Location: Living Room

Actors: Susannah, anyone’s arm

Props: Painting on wall, mobile phone, rag

Playback: Scene 1 (instrumental with Susannah’s one line of dialogue)

Limitations: None

Shots:

  1. WS of SP moving around room talking on phone and hanging up to deliver final line to herself
  2. WS of SP moving to take painting off the wall
  3. CU of SP with hands on painting, then taking it off the wall
  4. CU of SP with shocked face
  5. CU of rag over SP’s face; she struggles, then closes eyes as we see her fall out of frame. Editing note: Fade to black (unless we do the optional shots, in which case fade after shot #7).
  6. [Optional] WS of SP crumpled on floor
  7. [Optional] MS of SP’s legs moving across the floor as if she’s being dragged
  8. Get additional angles of words behind painting for scene 6!

Scene 2: It’s brain-drilling time, y’all!

Location: Living Room (important to keep this scene very close up; it shouldn’t be apparent that we’re using the same room as Scene 1)

Actors: Susannah, Holly, Sophia, Lisa? (might be too close-up - maybe Lisa should be eating chocolate in the corner of the interrogation room scenes instead?), arms of anyone else (two people needed)

Props: Drill, surgical mask, assorted doctor and nurse costume items, safety goggles

Playback: Scene 2 (instrumental with doctor/nurse dialogue)

Limitations: Dialogue has not been written or recorded yet. One line should be something like: “You’re making a big mistake using a drill bit that size.”

Shots:

  1. CU of HC and SC talking to each other (lip synching with recorded dialogue OR shot from behind). Lighting note: Try putting them directly in front of a light shining right at the camera for an operating table effect (and to silhouette them). (Not sure if this will actually work.)
  2. ECU of SP’s eyes fluttering/blinking as she slowly regains consciousness
  3. ECU of HC and SC’s masked faces leaning over SP. Editing note: Fade from blurry (if possible) to signify SP regaining consciousness.
  4. ECU of SP’s expression changing from dazed to terrified
  5. CU of HC and SC as HC lifts up an arm from her side to reveal the drill. Both put on safety goggles (or just HC if there’s only one pair). HC turns on the drill.
  6. ECU of drill (which is on) moving diagonally down through an otherwise empty frame (to give the appearance that it’s approaching SP).
  7. ECU of SP’s eyes - even more terrified.
  8. MS of two sets of arms grabbing HC and SC and pulling them out of frame - or repeat the ether rag thing from scene 1, possibly including the legs dragging? Editing note: Fade to black.

Scene 3: Singing. Singing? Singing.

Location: Basement (maybe attempt shots through door with window in first floor back hallway)

Actors: Jane, Tanya, Susannah, Lisa?

Props: Interrogation room set-up (table, chair, rope or handcuffs, etc.), file with papers in it, chocolate

Playback: Scene 3 (instrumental with Jane/Tanya dialogue)

Limitations: None

Shots:

  1. ECU of SP’s eyes fluttering/blinking as she slowly regains consciousness (maybe re-use the shot #2 footage from previous scene to deliberately make the audience feel deja vu...but then the shot widens to reveal a new setting)
  2. WS of SP alone and tied and/or handcuffed to chair in interrogation room, groggily regaining consciousness, starting to look around and struggle a bit against the restraints
  3. MS of JA and TP silhouettes in hallways gesturing dramatically to the pre-recorded dialogue (should be shot/lit in a way that makes lip synching unnecessary); JA opens file folder at appropriate moment in dialogue; both shrug at the end of dialogue and turn towards door; one pushes it open and we see SP inside. Shooting note: maybe attempt to shoot this upstairs so that Susannah can be seen through the window in the door
  4. MS of JA and TP entering the room and confronting SP. Editing note: No fade; this transitions directly into next scene.

Playback: You’re Making a Really Big Mistake
