Assignment – Briefing Sheet
Purpose
Learners will use a light microscope and electron micrograph images to identify structures and functions in different types of tissues |
Task One (This provides evidence for P3) · Use a light microscope to view different types of plant and animal tissue.
· Make accurate scientific drawings of plant and animal tissue types - At least 2 types of plant tissue and 2 types of animal tissue.
· Label and annotate your drawings as far as you are able. - You may not be able to name structures that you see, but the important thing is to demonstrate that you are making suitable observations. Describe shapes and relationships, or distinguish distinct zones within the tissue you are viewing. |
Task Two (This provides evidence for P5) Draw high-quality diagrams of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell types. Label the main organelles present in each type of cell and state the function of each organelle. |
Task Three (This provides evidence for P4) Describe the structure and function of the 4 main tissue types: - Epithelial tissue - Muscle tissue - Connective tissue - Nervous tissue You have been provided with a collection of electron microscope images of human tissues. Interpret these micrographs, providing information such as: - Tissue type - Likely location in the human body - Function - Cell shapes / types of specialised cells - Key features that allow this tissue to perform its role in the human body |
Task Four (This provides evidence for M2) Explain how the presence or absence of different cell structures and organelles relates to the function of particular tissues. Use diagrams and written information in your own words. Consider a minimum of 4 examples of tissue-types. You may wish to use the following questions as a starting point: - Muscle cells usually contain a high number of mitochondria. Why would this be the case? - Columnar epithelium forms villi in the digestive system. What is the function of this? - Epithelium may be only one cell in thickness. Why is this useful?
Please note that simply answering these three questions a will not be sufficient to gain you a merit grade, you will provide detailed examples relating to at least 4 tissue types. |
Task Five (This provides evidence for D2) Compare the similarities and differences between 2 different tissue types that perform similar functions. Include diagrams with written descriptions and summarise in a comparative table.
