THE GREAT DEBATE

SCENARIO:        CONGRATULATIONS!! You have been chosen to be a member of the hearing to determine The New York State Board of Education’s physical education curriculum.  Each “group” will have several members to organize information, and prepare for your group’s statement before the arbitration panel.

RULES of ENGAGEMENT :

  1. Use your time wisely
  2. Respect everyone’s points of view.
  3. Learn to appreciate and resolve conflicts.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

BOE - Board of Education

  1. Superintendent – responsible for overseeing the proceedings and maintaining control of all parties during the hearing. All BOE members will be allowed to vote at the end of the hearing.
  2. Assistant Superintendent (SSPEE Critic) – responsible for critically evaluating the validity and authenticity of the Sport Ed Enthusiasts.
  3. Assistant Superintendent (FEF Critic) - responsible for critically evaluating the validity and authenticity of the Fitness Education Fanatics.
  4. Assistant Superintendent (STA Critic) - responsible for critically evaluating the validity and authenticity of the Skills Theme Advocates.
  5. Secretary  - responsible for managing groups, props, and demonstrations before, during and after presentations of arguments, rebuttals and the decision making process

PER – PE Reporters

  1. Director / Reporter– responsible for the group’s overall workings including during the preparation period, the hearing, rebuttal, and decision making process. Also responsible for introducing and closing the hearing process with a brief statement (15-30 sec) on the impact this hearing may have on PE in the state of New York.
  2. Recorder – responsible for recording (written) all happenings and persons involved during the preparation period, the hearing, rebuttal, and decision-making process.
  3. Videographer - responsible for recording (video) all happenings during the preparation period, the hearing, rebuttal, and decision making process.
  4. Photographer - responsible for recording (digital photo) all happenings during the preparation period, the hearing, rebuttal, and decision making process.
  5. Writer - responsible for reporting all happenings in the form of a 1-2 page newsletter.
  6. Editor - responsible for editing all written reports resulting from the preparation period, the hearing, rebuttal, and decision making process.

SSPEE, FEF, & STA

  1. Executive Director – responsible for the group’s overall workings including during the preparation period, the hearing, rebuttal, and decision making process.
  2. Artistic Director - responsible for the group’s artistic representations and presentations
  3. Curriculum Consultant - responsible for researching the group’s curriculum
  4. Writer - responsible for writing approximately 100 word statements to be released to the PE Reporters prior to the hearing and following the decision BOE’s decision.
  5. Editor - responsible for proof reading all statements to be released to the PE Reporters prior to the hearing and following the decision BOE’s decision.
  6. Props Master – responsible for organizing all props, teaching aids, demonstration activities.
