SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The United Macedonian-Americans of Detroit (UMAD) Scholarship will award four (4) qualified high school or undergraduate university students in the Metro Detroit region $1,000 scholarships for full-time undergraduate studies at accredited colleges and universities in the United States. The application deadline is October 19, 2012, with recipients of the scholarship awards being announced and recognized at the UMAD’s “Proud to be Macedonian” Dinner/Dance on Saturday, November 3, 2012.

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants will write a 500-word essay responding to the question, "What makes you a proud Macedonian-American?” Students are required to fill out the application document and provide the additional materials as outlined below.

ELIGIBILITY

Students of Macedonian descent who have a minimum GPA of 3.0 attending a high school within the Metro Detroit region, including Windsor, Ontario, or college or university within the United States or Ontario are eligible to apply. Only one member per immediate family may receive a Macedonian-American Scholarship during any given academic year.

SELECTION CRITERIA

A panel of 3 non-Macedonian academics (selected from local colleges/universities or high schools) will select the four winners from all applicants based on the following criteria:

  1. Compelling nature of their essay
  2. Academic achievements to date
  3. Extracurricular activities
  4. Interest in Macedonian subjects
  5. Involvement in the Macedonian community

The panel will not know the identity of applicant at the time they are evaluating the essays. All procedures will be followed to maintain an objective evaluation of each essay by panel members. No UMAD member will be involved in this part of the evaluation.

LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION
Applicants must provide one (1) letter of recommendation from a current or past instructor/employer/religious leader, etc., who can speak to the applicant’s character/qualifications.

TRANSCRIPT
Applicants must provide one (1) copy of the most recent transcript from their high school or college.

DEADLINE
All entries with the requested materials (see checklist below) must be submitted no later than 5 p.m. Wednesday,
October 19th, 2012 to be considered.

SCHOLARSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT

The four recipients will be notified no later than Friday, October 26th. They will be invited to the UMAD’s “Proud to be Macedonian” Dinner/Dance on Saturday. November 3, 2012 at the Macedonian Cultural Center, Sterling Heights, MI.  At this event, they will be introduced to the Macedonian community and their awards will be presented. A ticket for each winner will be provided. Each recipient is expected to attend as part of their award.

*All submitted materials will remain UMAD’s property and winners agree UMAD can use their photo, name, and essay used for public relations purposes, and may be published on UMAD social media sites.  The confidentiality of all applicants will be respected. UMAD assumes no liability for the independent panel’s decision. While making their decision the panel members will not know the identity of the applicant. Nor will UMAD be responsible for any negligence or omissions by any of its members with respect to this Scholarship Award.
