May Library Newsletter
Warm weather (we hope) salutations are sent your way from this corner of the world. We are down to just a few weeks left of school and then summer will be upon us, wow! We have been encouraging the kids to keep reading during the summer and to visit our wonderful county library. Reading is so important to academic growth and they allow us to use our imagination. I just want to end the year with a short poem by Joan Bransfield Graham called Books: “ If I could use the books I’ve read, like building blocks, they’d stretch ahead---a road to travel, river of rhyme, flight of fancy, bridge over time. No feet or boat, no plane or car could ever take me quite so far. Books stay by me in joy, in strife, and one by one, books change my life.”
The 2011 California Young Reader Medal picture book winner is Martina the Beautiful Cockroach by Carmen Agra Deedy! There were five wonderful books to choose from which made it especially difficult this year. If you haven’t had a chance to read these books please come by and check them out. You won’t be disappointed.
If you need help with grade level lists for summer reading please come by and see me in the library before the break. Also, there is a wonderful website called READKIDDOREAD.com that is sponsored by author James Patterson that has each grade level broken down and has a wonderful selection for each along with book reviews and comment by other parents and authors. Check it out!
The cutoff for taking Accelerated Reader tests is May 20th. The kids need to have reached their goals by that date to qualify for the AR Parties. The 2nd and 3rd graders will be going to the High School gym and watching a movie along with eating pizza and ice cream on the afternoon of March 31st. The 4th and 5th graders will be going to Klamath Falls to bowl and eat pizza at the Epicenter Bowling Center on June 1st. The kids will also receive engraved medals at the Awards Assembly on June 1st. We want to thank PTO and AES for paying for these events! Permission slips will be going out the week of the 23rd so please get those back in before the trips or your child will not be able to attend. This year you will also need to have all overdue books in or paid for to attend the AR field trips so please contact me if you have any questions at 233-7210 ext. 208.
