The Road Ahead
Chapter 1 – Info
How could such an awful thing had happened? The G-virus was spread all across America, creating massive chaos in the empty never ending landscape, the before so beautiful country was now turned into the cursed land of despair and corruption. It all started two and a half years ago, when scientists, madly trying to find a cure for cancer, created a “cure” that seemed to work in the start, but it only seemed. A few months after the first people were “cured”, some of them died and they seemed to mutate with immense haste, it was a horrible and disgusting sight, in less than a week, an ordinary human being was turned into something that would remind me of a combination between a rotten body and a human. These “things” ate everything living, even plants, merely to stay alive, they had no intelligence left of importance and seemed to run only on instincts. In case one of them scratched you, touched a wound you had, or just anything in contact with them. You were doomed to become one of them.
After the first people had turned into zombies, the scientists found out the disease was also carried by both air and water. Only the “chosen” survived, they were people called so because they were resistant, or even immune to the disease. The resistant couldn’t be infected by air or water, only by direct contact with the beings. The immune couldn’t contract the disease at all, they could only be killed by the zombies if wounded enough so they died, and unlike the normal people, The Immunes had a natural death. You see, the disease does not mutate the being as long as it lives, but it slowly kills it with a pain hurting so much that the person next to almost can feel it. A few seconds after the brain and heart stops in the body, the mutation starts working, because by then, all resistance in the body is gone and the disease can roam in the body freely, because unlike other diseases, this one does not die with its host. The only thing discovered so far that could slow down or stop the disease was if the temperature dropped below -20 degrees Celsius.
Chapter 2 – The roads of eternity
I walked along the dirt road singing Green Day’s song “Boulevard of broken dreams” “I walk this empty street on the boulevard of broken dreams, as the city sleeps….” I suddenly stopped singing because I saw a swarm of some bird type coming near. I dropped my backpack, found my camouflage carpet and put it over me and my backpack so we immediately came to look like a rock in the landscape. *Kraa* *kraa* *kraa* *the “kraa” sound continues for ½ hour* I removed the carpet thinking how I would ever have survived the barren roads without it, I began singing again “I walk a lonely road….”. Apparently it was crows, but the swarm seemed bigger than usual, they must really be in need of food, usually the crows don’t come in such big groups. Luckily, the only infect able types of creatures are humans and birds. So it’s easy to recognize an enemy, unless of course their thieves trying to mug you. After about 5 hours of walk I came to a small town. There never were any zombies in the small towns, they had all gathered in the big cities like Los Angeles or New York, the zombies somehow managed to keep together in tribes, having a rank system.
I went to the local town store to see if there was any canned food that had managed to survive the onslaught, I noticed there were still a few unexploded bombs after the U.S. Air force had bombed the region to remove any leftover zombie threats that might be. The store was a Kwik-e-mart, but it seemed a bit outlandish, probably because this town only had about 200 houses so it hadn’t been updated for years. Anyhow, food is food, and food can be eaten, so I had nothing to complain about.
I found 10 canned beans, and 60 other various cans with food in. but since it would be heavy to bring everything I thought I’d stay for a while until I could carry it. It was now 8 o’clock and I was tired so I went out in the back of the store and unfolded my sleeping bag. Oh, there was a gas oven out here to, and lots of gas, I couldn’t help stop smiling, because I hadn’t been this lucky for months. I opened a can with my Swiss knife and started cooking; after I had eaten I went to bed.
Chapter 3 – Anya
“Are you alive? Are you?” Was the sentence I woke up to the next morning, she was a small girl talking, all alone apparently, it’s amazing how she must have survived here, I’d guess she was about 14-16 years old. it was the first time I had heard a human voice for weeks so I had to reconfigure the brain a bit to put up an answer, “yes of course I’m alive, why else would I be in a sleeping bag with a backpack next to me?” “Her eyebrows went a bit up and she responded “oh, good point. Do you have any extra food or only the food you stole from me here in my home?” I looked surprised “HOME? Do you actually call this messed up Kwik-e-mart a home?” Now she looked angry “to your information Mr., YES this is my home, and YES it’s a bit messed right now, but the zombie crows just attacked it yesterday and I have a REALLY hard time surviving in this fucked up world. It’s okay you ate some of my food but at least be polite and say thank you. And if you’re going to stay would you please help me rebuild my home, please? Im too weak to carry some of the roof parts.” I was extremely impressed by her mature answer, she was acting like she was in her mid twenties, “Well uh, I guess I could help you a bit, since I didn’t plan on leaving straight away.
What’s your name by the way? Mine’s George” Just as I finished the sentence an infected eagle came flying through the open door and smacked in her head, I grabbed an iron pole and tried to hit it, but It was too fast, she went out in the back of the store and brought back a rifle, taking aim while I distracted it she shouted “CROUCH NOW!” *BANG* the eagle’s chest got shot and it lost control and hit the wall, she killed it and responded my earlier wondering about how she survived, by killing that eagle so fast I could hardly think before it was lying on the ground. She smiled because she knew she had impressed me, “my name’s Anya” she said.
Chapter 4 – Rebuilding
“Are you one of The Immune?” I asked “nope” she said “I’m just one skilled survivalist and a lucky son-of-a-bitch” “but if you have home, how do you get food? I mean, I survive by travelling the country and grabbing various canned food and eating fruit and the few fish I can catch.” “That’s my secret honey, and I don’t know if I can trust you” “That’s okay, I respect that”.
We went to a construction site and grabbed the parts we needed to repair the house; I took the heavy wood parts since she couldn’t carry them we spent all the day repairing, only having a few breaks to eat. At the end of the day we had the roof repaired, the walls fortified, and the windows fortified, even the doors were fortified with planks and steel plates making them double thickness. Now we finally felt safe.
Chapter 5 – “I walk a lonely a road”
At evening we went in doors, if I didn’t tell you earlier, it’s in the evening the swarms mostly come out, because zombies don’t like heat, and it’s cooler at night. We cooked some goulash, ate it, and brushed teeth. She also had a sleeping bag to sleep in, so we slept very close to each other to keep the temperature higher. *Kraa* *kraa* *kraa* I woke up and could hear a crow swarm outside, I whispered “Anya, wake up, there’s some flying trouble outside” she woke up and looked at me “oh shit not crows again, they nearly killed me last time” she looked frightened and I held her in my arms, we crawled out of the sleeping bags and started to prepare in case they got through somewhere we missed to fortify, she brought her rifle and I took an Uzi she also kept (an Uzi is a fast shooting sub-machinegun invented in Israel).
We waited for a half hour, and thought the threat was gone when suddenly they came in like a flood from a small hole behind the broken fridge in the kitchen. We began shooting and moved towards the door. We got hundreds of small scratches and pecks, Anya’s leg got hurt so she limped, I got the door open and we made it outside. I closed the door but the crows went outside through the same hole as they entered the house. I shot as fast as possible and changed magazine faster than my head could follow my arms but in the end there were too many, and Anya was infected, she shot and shot and shot, but they kept coming towards her. I’d imagine we killed about 300 those 10 minutes we shot, when suddenly she said “flee to the west part of town, there’s a military shelter, that’s where I got my food supplies, its zombie proof, run, I’m dead anyway, I’m infected, I will shoot myself with the last bullet I have so you won’t have to fight me tomorrow” she said with tears in her eyes, I couldn’t say a word, I just ran and ran until I reached the west part of town, I saw the shelter door, I went inside, the second I shut the door I heard bangs from crows smacking towards it. I fainted.
I woke up the next morning, the crows were gone, I filled a few bags I found with food and went to say a last goodbye to Anya’s body, but there was nothing left, they had eaten everything, except her bones.
I cried. I made a grave for her body and buried her remains. As I realized why I had made the rule for myself not to befriend anybody. “I walk a lonely road, don’t know where it goes but I’m alone”
