Goal 2: Create a positive and inclusive campus climate for all by advancing equity, diversity, and social justice

Action Step

UCT

General Description of Activities

1. Create a campus definition of equity, diversity, and social justice and share these understandings with all students, staff, and faculty

SCSE

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusiveness as a means of Success and Excellence: Diversity discussions should not be restricted to under-represented groups. The whole of SCSE and UMD have to engage all of its members, majority and under-represented groups alike, in the diversity-based goals of their Strategic Plan.

CEHSP

  • Document and disseminate information on what CEHSP is doing is a large and ongoing effort.  This information will facilitate more collaboration within and across units.
  • Create an SJAC page/presence on the CEHSP homepage to help SJAC better communicate our inclusive campus climate efforts within and outside the college.

Action Step

UCT

General Description of Activities

2. Implement effective, measurable processes to recruit, retain, and support diverse students, faculty and staff.

Expand recruiting Native American and other minority students through Community partnerships

SCSE

  • Work with SCSE Dean, college staff, departments, and Admissions to reach 5-year enrollment targets for American Indian, Black, Hispanic, and female students.
  • Identify target underrepresented groups among the high schools in MN. Departments should build partnerships with them for outreach and recruiting.
  • Following administrative leadership, the departmental heads should also be committed to diversity-related issues. The department heads, for example, should discuss with their faculty members how diversity and ethics issues could be integrated into their courses (when possible).

Multicultural Center

  • Work with Admissions on training sessions for new admissions tour.
  • Increase Campus Awareness about the Multicultural Center

SCSE

  • Work with Dean and Department Heads to implement faculty and staff training.

Faculty advisors and instructors should pay close attention to the students’ performance, their well being, and to engage students from underrepresented groups.

  • Cultural training for new faculty and staff should go beyond a simple, couple of hours “orientation”. Perhaps, such required training could take place annually for all existing faculty as a refresher with case-studies (example: as part of the department retreat). Faculty must be well trained on effectively handling cultural based situations in either their classroom or laboratories.
  • A student-TA relationship is more problematic than student-faculty relationships when either the student or the TA is from an underrepresented group. As a result, cultural/diversity training tailored for TAs is critical.
