Human Body Independent Study Unit
As part of our Math/Science Enrichment Curriculum, your child studied the human brain in class. We looked at this body part in general terms and tried to understand how its structure helps us. To finish off our human structure unit, each student is challenged to complete an independent study project on the human body part or system of their choice. A fill in the blank version for their research will be given to the students with a copy attached to edmodo also.
They will begin research in class and will have a total of five - six class periods to work on the research and presentation in class. Most students will have to work on their projects at home as well. Research sites will need to be secured by students and saved in their edmodo backpacks. I will provide some reference books for them. Students may also use personal interviews with individuals that would be considered experts in their field. I will review with them the process of citing their work as they will need to include a bibliography with their final report. A handout which outlines how to cite work is included in their edmodo folders and will be handed out to the students.
Their final report should be a virtual presentation which includes the required research information and anything else they feel would add to their topic. They will also have to prepare a model of their body part so some building at home will be necessary. 4th graders are required to write an essay about their presentation but this will be worked on mostly in class.
In terms of the final due date, I will let you know the exact date soon. It depends on how many days they might be gone for other school obligations and how quickly I see them progressing in class. A good estimate is that we will do the presentations the week of May 21st.
If you have questions about their project, I will be available via email and would be happy to help. I am very excited to see their final projects. This is a large research project but I have seen great things out of them this year and I expect this will be no different.
Thank you, as always, for your help and support on their Enrichment projects.
