American History: The American Civil War

Goal: Students will investigate the causes, outcomes, and the long term consequences of the United States Civil War.
Objectives:
- Students will be able to explain the causes of the Civil War
- Students will be able to define key terms included in Chapter 16
- Students will be able to show how the North used its advantages in the War
- Students will be able to describe what life was like during the Civil War time period in America.
- Students will be able to explain who won the Civil War
- Students will become familiar with some of the major documents, battles and events throughout the war.
- Students will be able to explain how the Civil War affects the lives of people in the United States today.
Standards:
- U.S. History Standards from the National Standards of History in Schools
United States Era 5
- Standard 1: The causes of the Civil War.
- Standard 2: The course and character of the Civil War and its effects on the American people
- Standard 3: How various reconstruction plans succeeded or failed
Time: 18 Class Periods
Day 1: Introduce Students to American Civil War by showing short video.
To get them use to the vocabulary they will see have them play Hangman game.
Quia Hangman Activity and Take the PreChapter Survey to see what they know.
Day 2: Students will go through the Chapter 16 Section 1 Prezi. After they are finished they will write a short synopsis on what they learned on their gaggle blogs for the day.
Day 3: Students will go through the Chapter 16 Section 2 PowerPoint. After they are finished they will write a short synopsis on what they learned on their gaggle blogs for the day. For Homework they will make comments on 3 of their classmates blogs about specific points about the previous days post.
Day 4: Students will go through the Chapter 16 Section 3 E-sheet activity. After they are finished they will write a short synopsis on what they learned on their gaggle blogs for the day.
Day 5. Students will take the Quia Chapter 16 Quiz. After they have finished they will read Chapter 16 Sections 4 and 5
Day 6: Students will go through the Chapter 16 Section 4 . After they are finished they will write a short synopsis on what they learned on their gaggle blogs for the day, and do Trackster Activity.
Day 7: Students will go through the Chapter 16 Section 5 Prezi and do the Trackster Activity.
Day 8-11: Students will watch the Movie Glory. After the movie they will create a discussion on Gaggle’s discussion board on what life would be like to be an African American Soldier during American Civil War. They will need at least one 300 Word initial post and 3 comments to other classmates’ posts.
Days 12-17: Students will work on a UMapper Project to become more familiar with the various battles of the Civil War. The Final Work collaboration project will be posted on my class blog as a study tool.
Day 18: Students will review for the test by taking the Quia Review Game Activity
Day 19: Test over Chapter 18.
After completing the chapter the students will take a Chapter survey
