Q&A Session for Advanced Forms in Google Docs

February 1, 2011 4:30PM PT/7:30PM ET

Q: do you need a question or page at the end that everyone is directed to in order to submit the form?  I've had instance when if they choose one path they can't get to submit

A: Usually you need to have a final last page for submission that everyone will see to submit. You don't need to have a question, just have the page exist.

________________________________________________________________

Q: when using the multiple choice or grid questions is there a "defualt" for where the dot exists or is there a way to have all choices empty?  I;ve found that the first choice is always selected unless they change to another answer

A: You can review this content in the Google Apps for Education Training Center about default answers in forms: http://edutraining.googleapps.com/Training-Home/module-4-docs/chapter-6/2-7

________________________________________________________________

Q: What is the "help text"?

A: The help text is gray text that will appear beneath the question text, meant to help users understand the question, or let you elaborate more on the question.

________________________________________________________________

Q: Can the form question be accessed in programatic ways?

A: You can only access the data from the spreadsheet via the spreadsheets API. Unfortunately, you cannot create or edit forms questions via the spreadsheets API.

________________________________________________________________

Q: how do you access the translation feature?

A: That was actually an automatic feature of Google Chrome. Chrome automatically detects the language and will offer to translate. There's also a chrome extension that uses Google Translate you can search for as well.

________________________________________________________________

Q: You mention Moodle - do you work with Edmodo at all?

A: There is nothing available at this time that integrates with Edmodo.

________________________________________________________________

Q: does that feature include a translation option for Korean?

A: Yes, Google translate supports translation from Korean.

________________________________________________________________

Q: How do you use icons for bookmarks?  A Firefox plugin?

A: Yes, Chrome and Firefox have extensions/plugin. Do a search for "favicons in bookmarks bar."

________________________________________________________________

Q: where do you find url shortener

A:The URL shortener is "http://goo.gl"

________________________________________________________________

Q: does google retain any copyrights to the forms or information in the forms?

A: No, information is not copyrighted that you have in your documents or forms.

________________________________________________________________

Q: are you able to set notification rules for changes in google docs?

A: Only for spreadsheets and forms at this time.

________________________________________________________________

Q: missed it - where did he go to get notification rules?

A: You get to notification rules by going under the "Share" menu and selecting "Set notification rules"

________________________________________________________________

Q: I've been playing with adding Apps script to some of my forms.  Very powerful. I'd be interested in presenting some of these ideas, or in hearing how others are doing the same.

A: Excellent suggestion. We are planning to feature a Professional Development webinar on scripts sometime in March or April. You''ll receive notification of upcoming webinars soon!

________________________________________________________________

Q: I would to learn how to customize size of form to embed in HTML code b/c height/width are often too big to be embedded into my WordPress blogs.

A: When you click to embed the form in your website, it gives you an iframe address. If you scroll over in the URL, you'll see something like "width="760" height="850"". You can change that to fit your width/height needs.

________________________________________________________________

Q: what do I search for under "search templates" for self grading quizzes again?

A: In the Google Docs template gallery, try searching for GCT Self grading quiz

________________________________________________________________

Q: tim spoke before about embedding a form on a website. i tried to embed a form on a wordpress blog, but it would not load.  is this feature incompatible with wordpress?

A: Does wordpress allow for iframes? I'm unfamiliar with it, so I'm not sure. If not, then you'll probably just want to post a link to the form that will open the form in a separate window/tab. I just did a quick search and found this plugin that might be able to help; http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/google-forms-shortcode/

________________________________________________________________

Q: For the answers - does capitalization count?

A: No, for this example template, it does not count.

________________________________________________________________

Q: Dana, is it possible to recieve an email link with the recorded webinar? does that include the video? I would like to share this with teachers at the school I work at.

Priority: N/A

A: Yes, the webinar will be uploaded to YouTube along with our other webinars in our resource center: http://www.google.com/a/help/intl/en/edu/resource_center.html

________________________________________________________________

Q: Thanks, Dana. Can you define values, say for 1/2 credit if a student gets an answer partially correct?

A: You can change the weight of the answers and manually input if it’s ½ credit. You can also use formulas in spreadsheets (if statements) to evaluate answers as well.

________________________________________________________________

Q: Is there a way to prevent one student form typing another student's name in the quiz, taking it, and then submitting the answers?

A: If you have Google Apps for Education at your school/district, there's an option to collect the users username when they submit the form, so you know who submitted the form. Without Google Apps for Education, it's not as accurate.

________________________________________________________________

Q: Also does spacing count?

A: Yes, spacing does count.

________________________________________________________________

Q: Is there any possibility to have complex questions like when you have to chose 2 options as your answer?

A: You can use checkboxes which allow you to select more than one answer.

________________________________________________________________

Q: can we share spreadsheets from GAs to GApps accounts/.

A: Yes.

________________________________________________________________

Q: how do you become a google certified teacher?

A: To become a Google Certified Teacher you must apply and attend a Google Teacher Academy. If you're interested in becoming a Google Apps for Education Certified Trainer you can see google.com/apps/teachertraining

________________________________________________________________

Q: how can i make myself a certified trainer?

A: Check out google.com/apps/teachertraining.

________________________________________________________________

Q: How do you get just a single student test results, so you can PDF their test?

A: You can copy and paste a single row into a different sheet of the spreadsheet. You can also try using the "Transpose" function on another sheet in the spreadsheet, you can then select a single row and have it appear where you can save it individually, or the “Filter” function to find a student’s name. You can then use the print/save as feature in Google Docs to create a PDF.

________________________________________________________________

Q: can you make it case sensitive?

A: Not at this time.

________________________________________________________________

Q: Is there a way for students to receive their grades immediately after taking the quiz or does the teacher have to communicate the grade to the students?

A: Not directly. You could create a copy of the gradebook and assign IDs, then publish that spreadsheet for students to view. You could also look into Apps Scripts -- similar to macros -- where you could write one that emailed the user their score after completion. That would take some programming knowledge.

________________________________________________________________

Q: is there an option to insert an image into form?

A: Not at this time. An option is to embed the form on a site (like Google Sites) and have the images embedded on the page.

________________________________________________________________

Q: Dana, I cannot attend next week's webinar.  Can I still get the recording/slides emailed?

A: Hi  Jen, yes, all webinars are uploaded here: google.com/a/help/intl/en/edu/resource_center.html
