Wave Behavior/ Phenomena

1. Reflection: Wave reflects off of a surface at the same angle.

Law of reflection

Examples

• echo
• Opera singer and acoustics shell

Reflectors

• concave
• spherical

don’t exactly meet in the center, but very close

• parabolic

focuses exactly at one point

• Convex
• wide view
• see around corners

• Elliptical Reflectors
• any wave starting at one focus (pl. focci) will pass through the other

1. Refraction: When a wave passes from one medium into another, it bends

Why?

the wave begins to travel at different speeds at different times

• Fast to slow,
• Slow to fast,

Example: Both sound and light waves travel faster through warmer

• When the ground is hot, the air lower is hot, so the light will bend up, and create a mirage
• Opposite thing happens to sound going from air (fast) to water (slow) which bends down

1. Interference
• where a peak and a trough meet, there is destructive interference
• where two peaks or two troughs meet, there is constructive interference.
• Therefore, there are points in the wave sum which will be really lound, and some points where you can’t hear anything
