Creating a Backtrack Machine in VMWare
note: Part A and B show how to create networks inside of VMware. Â Skip these steps if you are already familiar with this process or have already done so.
A. Creating a Network inside of a Cluster:
This step shows how to create a network inside of VMware for the Backtrack machines to reside in. Â If you have already completed this step, skip to B.
- Select the cluster for the new network.
- Â Choose the Configuration tab along the top.
- Select Networking in the left pane.
- Â Select add networking along the top right.
- Click next.
- Choose Create a Virtual Switch and uncheck any boxes underneath it.
- Click Next.
- Type in the name of the network under network label
- Click Next, then Finish.
B. Cloning the Master From Another Network:
This step is used for creating a master copy of a host for a new cluster. Â If you are creating a new network and want to use a master that already exists from another network, follow these steps. Â Otherwise, skip to part C.
- Right click on the machine that you wish to clone.
- Select clone.
- Type in the name of the new master.
- Select the cluster for the new master.
- Click Next, Next, Next, and then Finish.

C. Creating the Virtual Machines:
- Right click on the cluster that the new machine is going to be created for and choose Create New Virtual Machine.
- Select Custom
- Click Next.
- Change the Name of the virtual machine
- Click Next, Next
- Choose the OS for the machine you are creating. Â For Backtrack, you will select the Linux radio button, and then choose Other Linux (32 bit) in the dropdown.
- Click Next, Next.
- Optional: Change the memory size to allocate for the machine.
- Click Next.
- Make sure that the correct network is selected.
- Click Next, Next.
- Select Use an existing virtual disk.
- Browse to the master copy (the image that you are basing the new machine on).
- Click Next, Next.
- Select Independent under mode. Choose non persistent.
- Next, Finish.

D. Adding user to a virtual machine:
The following steps show how to add a user to a virtual machine so that they can log onto it.
- Right click on the virtual machine and select Add Permissions
- Select Add…
- Type in the user name
- Click ok
- Change the assigned role to virtual machine user (sample)
