Creating a Backtrack Machine in VMWare

note: Part A and B show how to create networks inside of VMware.  Skip these steps if you are already familiar with this process or have already done so.

A. Creating a Network inside of a Cluster:

This step shows how to create a network inside of VMware for the Backtrack machines to reside in.  If you have already completed this step, skip to B.

  1. Select the cluster for the new network.
  2.  Choose the Configuration tab along the top.

  1. Select Networking in the left pane.
  2.   Select add networking along the top right.

  1. Click next.
  2. Choose Create a Virtual Switch and uncheck any boxes underneath it.

  1. Click Next.
  2. Type in the name of the network under network label

  1. Click Next, then Finish.

B. Cloning the Master From Another Network:

This step is used for creating a master copy of a host for a new cluster.  If you are creating a new network and want to use a master that already exists from another network, follow these steps.  Otherwise, skip to part C.

  1. Right click on the machine that you wish to clone.
  2. Select clone.
  3. Type in the name of the new master.

  1. Select the cluster for the new master.

  1. Click Next, Next, Next, and then Finish.

 

 

 

 

 

C. Creating the Virtual Machines:

  1. Right click on the cluster that the new machine is going to be created for and choose Create New Virtual Machine.
  2. Select Custom

  1. Click Next.
  2. Change the Name of the virtual machine

  1. Click Next, Next
  2. Choose the OS for the machine you are creating.  For Backtrack, you will select the Linux radio button, and then choose Other Linux (32 bit) in the dropdown.

  1. Click Next, Next.
  2. Optional: Change the memory size to allocate for the machine.

  1. Click Next.
  2. Make sure that the correct network is selected.

  1. Click Next, Next.
  2. Select Use an existing virtual disk.

  1. Browse to the master copy (the image that you are basing the new machine on).
  2. Click Next, Next.
  3. Select Independent under mode. Choose non persistent.
  4. Next, Finish.

 

 

D. Adding user to a virtual machine:

The following steps show how to add a user to a virtual machine so that they can log onto it.

  1. Right click on the virtual machine and select Add Permissions
  1. Select Add…

  1. Type in the user name
  2. Click ok
  1. Change the assigned role to virtual machine user (sample)
