Experiment Day

Science Experiment #1

Children will learn the characteristics of chalk.

Children will explore what happens when chalk gets wet.

- Observe if children can follow directions.

- Observe if children can make and test predictions.

-  Observe if children can describe results.

- Have children handle a chalk stick and describe how the chalk looks and feels.

- Prompt children to notice that the chalk leaves powdery particles on their hands.

- Experiment by stroking dry chalk on paper and then dipping it in water and stroke on paper again.

- Compare the dry chalk to the moistened chalk on paper.

- Next prompt children to dip the chalk in tinted water and describe what happens. (Test predictions)

- Repeat the process with other chalk sticks and different colors of tinted water.  Dip chalk in two different colors and share the results.

-  Draw a picture of first three sequential steps of experiment.

- How does the chalk look and feel?

- Do you think the chalk marks will be white when you write with the chalk? (after dipping in colored water)
