POSITION SUMMARY:
Works independently and in consultation with English Department faculty, the Dean of the College, and Information Systems on the use and implementation of Information Technology. Serves as initial and primary point of contact for technological issues, including planning, budget development, allocation and purchasing. Serves as administrator of department computing and information resources. Provides department faculty and staff with technical support, troubleshooting, training and consulting services. Participates in cross-campus technology projects and initiatives.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Experience and Training
Bachelor’s degree required, with an understanding of and appreciation for English language and literature (or other fields in the humanities). Experience providing technical support and troubleshooting required. Experience with project planning and management preferred. Experience designing and/or conducting end-user training preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, Ability
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Strong working knowledge of WFU's standard software load and standard hardware configurations
- Ability to provide basic technical support and troubleshooting for standard WFU hardware and software
- Demonstrable knowledge of operating systems (Unix, DOS, Windows, OS/2) and networking (TCP/IP)
- Demonstrable knowledge of Microsoft Office 2000 applications including word processing programs (additionally, knowledge of WordPerfect would be a plus)
- Demonstrable knowledge of HTML design and WWW administration
- Demonstrable knowledge of operating systems - understanding of pedagogical uses and implications of technology
- Ability to research, evaluate, and report on discipline-specific/appropriate hardware and software
- Web authoring knowledge and capability
- Ability to define and manage projects, including management of student workers as needed
- Ability to design and deliver training to faculty as needed
- Understanding of basic networking concepts
- Ability to interact with other campus groups to facilitate timely problem resolution
Physical Requirements
Light work: Stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, repetitive motions.
Close visual acuity. Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Designs and provides training to department faculty and staff upon request.
- Provides primary technical support and troubleshooting to faculty and staff.
- Maintains and administers department computing resources (server, lab, website).
- Installs and maintains discipline-specific software.
- Consults with faculty on pedagogical uses of technology, including course and research related projects.
- Coordinates and facilitates faculty/staff ThinkPad distribution and refresh cycle.
- Serves as conduit for communication between WFU Information Services and the English Department.
- Investigates, evaluates and reports on developments in discipline related uses of technology.
- Trains/orients new faculty in ThinkPad use at WFU.
- Plans and prepares department technology budget.
- Participates in annual new freshman ThinkPad orientation training and its preparation.
- Investigates, seeks and completes additional training to stay current with emerging technology.
- Has ITG responsibilities for the Women’s and Gender Studies Program.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
- Participates in cross-campus projects and committees.
- Participates in discipline and non-discipline related projects, conferences and/or presentations.
- Consults on non-curricular (personal) uses of technology.
- Participates occasionally in multi-departmental projects.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
Generally responsible for own work only.
Occasional training and/or supervision of student aides, generally limited to department or faculty requested projects (i.e., short term).
AUTHORITY/ACCOUNTABILITY:
Works independently. Reports to the department Chair; Dean of College.
Responsible for technology budget, including working with outside vendors, tracking and monitoring of expenses
PROBLEM SOLVING:
Need for problem solving occurs daily. Aside from providing ongoing technical support and troubleshooting, the vast majority of problem solving requires discovering new methods to address each situation.
