Messages  Moodle ISU


Introduction

The Messages block offers a simple interface to send an instant message or email to individuals or to the whole class. Messages provide a way for you and your students to send emails through the course without having to manage multiple email accounts.

Note:  You can access your profile from within a course by either clicking on your name in the upper right-hand corner or by clicking on the My Profile link in the Navigation block.

Modify Message Setting Preferences

Faculty setting preferences do not apply to your students because setting preferences are user specific. Students can modify their message setting preferences using this same procedure.

  1. Log into Moodle ISU
  2. Before you browse to a course, In the Administration block, Click on the My Profile Settings option.

Note: Do not confuse the Navigation block My profile with the administration block My profile settings. They contain different links.

  1. Click on the Messaging option.

Message Settings

  1. You will see a list of options that you can set depending on your preferences.  A check mark will appear to let you know that the boxes are selected.  In the Pop-up Notifications area, Click on the boxes that best meet your preferences.

Note: If you check the popup notification option you will receive pop ups when you receive a message. If you check the email option it will send the email directly to your account.  You can have both options selected if you wish.

2.   Click on the box to prevent people who are not students in the class from messaging you.

3.    Click Update Profile button located at the bottom of the screen to save your changes.

Manage Contacts

You can send messages to your entire class by using the Newsgroup option in Messages, the Send Message option in the Participants section, or the Quickmail block. People who send you a message will automatically show up in your contacts.

To Add/Block/Delete Contacts

  1. Click Messages located in either the Message block (if you have added one) or in the Navigation block located under My profile.

  1. Type in the name of the individual you wish to contact and Click on the Search People and Messages button to start your search.

  1. A Users Found list will appear with names of people who met your search criteria.

  1. Click the plus icon next to the individuals’ name to add them as a contact.
  2. Click the circle-backlash icon to block that individual from contacting you.
  3. Click the conversation bubbles to view your message history.
  1. The individual has now been added/blocked from your contact list.

Using the Advanced Searching Option

  1. Click the Messages option located in either the Message block or in the Navigation block.
  1. Click the Advanced option located next to the Search People and Messages button.

To Search for a Person

  1. Type the person’s name in the Name text box and Click the Search for a Person button.

Note:  You can limit your search to people in your courses by selecting the Only in my courses box.

  1. A User’s Found list of names will appear at the bottom of the screen.
  1. Click the plus icon next to the individuals’ name to add them as a contact.
  2. Click the circle-backslash iconto block the individual from contacting you.
  3. Click the conversation bubblesto view your message history with that individual.
  1. After you have selected your option the screen will change to allow you to:
  1. Send a message, if you have selected the plus mark.
  1. Takes you back to the beginning screen for advanced search, if you selected to block or delete an individual.
  2. Takes you to any conversations that you may have had with the individual, if you selected the conversation bubbles.

To Search for a Message

  1. Located below the Search for a Person text box is the Search Messages area.  Type in the word or subject you wish to find in Keywords text box.

  1. Select the options that you wish to use, located under the Keywords text box.  By checking the box in front of the Only in My Courses, only individuals enrolled in your courses will appear.
  2. Click on the Search Messages button to begin searching.
  3. Messages Found will appear at the bottom of the page.
  4. To view the message, Click Context link below the message.

Send Messages

You can send messages either to an individual person or to a selected group of people within your course.

To Send a Message to a Specific Person

  1. Click Messages option located in either the Message block or in the Navigation block.
  2. In your Contact List, Click the name of the individual who you would like to contact.

Note: If the desired individual is not in your contact list you can search for them by using the Search function, described above.

  1. Type in your message
  2. Click Send Message button.

To Send a Message to Selected Course Participants

  1. In the People block, Click Participants.

Note: If you do not see the People block in your course you can add it.  For help adding the People block to your course please see the Moodle ISU Overview.

OR

  1. In the course you wish to message, in the Navigation block click on Participants.

  1. Check the box located to the left of the student’s name to select individuals or Click Select All button located at the bottom of the list.

  1. In the With selected users… dropdown menu, Select Send a Message.

  1. Type the message that you wish to send.
  2. Click the Preview button to view your message before sending it to students.preview message.jpg

  1. If the message is correct: Click Send Message button.
  2. If you want to make changes to your message:
  1. Click Update button.
  2. Correct your message then Click Preview.
  3. Click Send Message button.
