- Observe if children can identify the value of a nickel.

- Pair Share: Give pairs of children 1 nickel and 5 pennies. Have children compare a penny and a nickel and tell how they are alike and different.

- Independent Practice: Count the pennies and nickels in each box.

- Do 5 pennies have the same value as 1 nickel?

- Could you buy as much with 1 nickel as you can with 5 pennies?

- Count on to find the value for 1 nickel and 3 pennies.

Children will identify the dime and its value of 10 cents or 10 pennies.

- Observe if children can identify the value of a dime.

- Results of activities.

- Vocabulary: value, cent sign, heads, tails, dime.

- Pair Share: Use a magnifying glass to examine a penny, nickel and dime. Tell how they are alike and different.

- Small Group: Place price tags on classroom items. Each child will have coins totaling 4 cents - 12 cents and have them name an item they can buy.

- What do you think 1 dime is worth?

- Is the value of 1 dime the same as the value of 10 pennies? How do you know?

- Use your coins and name things you can buy with them.

- Observe if children are able to identify the coins and use them to match the cost.

- Whole Group: Count by 1’s, 5’s, and 10’s.

- Small Group: Children will be directed to use coins to show the amount they are given. Then they will write the amount using the cent sign.

- Pair Share: Play storekeeper and customers.  Children will use their coins to purchase items around the classroom with prize tags.

- Name each coin and its value.

- How many pennies will you use to purchase the item?

- Name 2 ways you can pay for the toy.

- Whole Group: Match 5 pennies to 1 nickel and 10 pennies to 1 dime. Repeat with 2 nickels.

- Small Group: Play a trading game.

- Independent Practice: Circle yes or no if they are able to trade the coins.

- If you give your partner a nickel, how many pennies will you take? (Repeat with dime)

- Can you trade 3 pennies for a nickel? Why?

- Use your pennies and dime to show a fair trade.
