Build The Roads

(sung to the tune of “Silver Bells”)

Lyrics by Robert Copp, Don Howe; and, new 3rd verse added in 2008 by Terri Pencovic

Verse 1

Urban freeways, Highway Gridlock

Will we ever get home?

In the air there’s the odor of ozone.

Hear them cursing, hear them screaming,

Stretching mile after mile

And in every parked car you will hear:

Chorus:

Build the roads!  Build the roads!

We want to get home by Christmas

We pay our tax - -

So don’t be lax!

Soon it will be Christmas Day!

Verse 2

Politicians keep complaining

That Caltrans is slow

They say we’re just too bureaucratic.

Hear them griping, privatizing

And deflecting the blame,

While in every parked car you will hear:

Chorus:

Verse 3

And now Caltrans wants more options

Multi-modal we plead!

Riding rail or mass transit’s the answer!

With more sidewalks and more bike paths

Even HOV lanes!

To avoid those parked cars where you hear:

Chorus:

Build the roads!  Build the roads!

We want to get home by Christmas

We pay our tax - -

So don’t be lax!

Soon it will be Christmas Day!

Verse 4

Now the drivers on the highway

Are really quite steamed.

They don’t care who is right, just resolve it.

See them raving, with a gesture!

But continue to wait,

Still in every parked car you will hear:

Final Chorus:

Build the roads!  Build the roads!

We want to get home by Christmas

We pay our tax - -

So don’t be lax!

Soon it will be Christmas Day!

add final tag line:  Soon it will be Christmas Day
(with doo wop style echoes) Christmas Day - ay - ay!
