Record numbers for McDonald’s 12th Annual Townsville Running
Participation and race records were smashed at the 12th Annual McDonald’s Townsville Running Festival held on 8 August 2010. 1840 people (up from 1457 in 2009) participated in the Festival which attracted athletes from across the globe and country – including from the Netherlands, Germany, USA, England, China, Canada, Japan , New Zealand, Taiwan, Tanzania, and Papua New Guinea, Victoria, New South Walers and across Queensland.
The ever-perfect warm Townsville Winter weather also encouraged spectators, with thousands of people lining the course in support of the runners.
As expected, Commonwealth Games athlete, Tanzanian, Oswald Revellian, easily broke David Crinitti’s 2009 record of 2:29:47, completing the marathon comfortably in 2:24:28. Oswald (who has a personal best time of 2:13:07) used the event as a training run in preparation for the Commonwealth Games in India later this year.
The lady’s winner for the Marathon - Colette Read (New Zealand), was surprised with her placing, completing the course in a time of 3:23:30.
Local, Amy Curtis won the Queensland Country Health Fund Half Marathon, in a personal best time of 1:25:16, well clear of her nearest rival, Christine Wong (1:30.58).
Local favourite Deahne Turnbull took out the women’s section of the 10km Sportsmed Run in a time of 0:39:13. Deahne used the event as preparation for the IAAF World Mountain Running Championship in Slovenia on the 5th September 2010.
While James Cook University Medical student Daniel Charles took out men’s Sportsmed 10km run with a time of 0:34:44
Local juniors, Caleb Hobson and Isis Flynn-Pittar both broke their own records set the previous year, completing the 5km McDonald’s Junior Fun Run in 16:51 and 18:52 respectively.
The Townsville Running Festival was organised by Townsville Road Runners a community organisation of volunteers from the community - who work for the community. The Townsville Running Festival – now in its 12th year is expected to continue to grow and attract the full spectrum of athletes – elite runners, fitness enthusiasts and those who want to have go. The 13th Townsville Running Festival will be held on 7 August 2011.
