World Lit – Things Fall Apart Writing

Directions:  Choose one of the topics below.  Compose an essay to address it, using examples from the text(s) to support your ideas (no personal pronouns).  

Format:  APA style, 2-3 pages in length, typed, double spaced, title page

Scoring Rubric:  introduction  5 pts

                        (summarizes ideas, interesting final thought)

1.  Consider the position of women in Umuofian society.  Were they in a subordinate or complementary position to men?

2.  Cite and describe the character traits you admire in Okonkwo and those you find undesirable.  For each, explain why you feel as you do.

3. Use one of the passages from the novel, listed below, as a controlling idea and write accordingly (be sure to have a strong thesis).

He [Okonkwo] had a slight stammer and whenever he got angry and could not get his words out quickly enough, he would use his fists” (p. 4).

“Perhaps down in his heart Okonkwo was not a cruel man. But his whole life was dominated by fear, the fear of failure and weakness….It was not external but lay deep within himself. It was the fear of himself, lest he should be found to resemble his father” (p. 13).
