 The children will:

  •  Identify soil and sand samples
  • Tell what soil and sand are made of
  • Describe differences between soil and sand
  • Understand that Earth’s surface is made up of different types of solid materials

What is the Earth surface made of? 

  1. Talk about the characteristics of soil and sand that makes the Earth’s surface.
  2. Display Flip Chart page 33.
  3. Help the children identify objects shown on the chart as paper plates, soil, sand, plastic spoon, and hand lens.
  4. Place soil and sand samples on paper plates.
  5. The teacher will explain that the Earth surface is covered with soil, rocks, and sand.
  6. Ask: What is the Earth made out of?
  7. Have the children look at the soil first.
  8. Have a volunteer circle the soil on the Flip Chart.
  9. Have the children explore soil using their hand lens.
  10. Ask: What can you tell about soil? (color, texture, and smell) What else did you learn by using your hand lens?
  11. Repeat procedure with sand.
  12. Have the children compare and contrast the sand and soil samples.
  13. Ask: How are the sand and soil alike and different? Which do you think is better for growing plants?
  14. Discuss results.
  15. Ask: What can you learn about sand and soil when you look at it and touch it? (Answer may include its color, texture, and objects that are found in it)

  • Identify components of land as rocks, sand, and soil.

What is the Earth covered by? 

  1. Have the children tell how sand and soil are same and different.
  2. Ask: Where have you seen soil and sand? How would we use sand and soil?
  3. Explain that the Earth is a place that has land and water.
  4. Display picture of Earth from the sky.
  5. Have the the children listen to the song “Looking Down from the Sky.”
  6. Display Flip Chart page 34 to review vocabulary terms.
  7. Ask: What do you see in the beach? (Sand) What do you think is on the ground under the grass, trees, and other plants growing in the park? (Soil)
  8. The teacher will explain that the Earth is covered by water and land. Land is made up of rock, sand and soil.
  9. Provide soil samples, sand, water cans, and observe what happens.
  10. Discuss wet and muddy.
  11. Ask: How is the texture of wet soil and sand and dry soil?  
  12. Have the children work in groups.
