| What is the Earth surface made of? | - Talk about the characteristics of soil and sand that makes the Earth’s surface.
- Display Flip Chart page 33.
- Help the children identify objects shown on the chart as paper plates, soil, sand, plastic spoon, and hand lens.
- Place soil and sand samples on paper plates.
- The teacher will explain that the Earth surface is covered with soil, rocks, and sand.
- Ask: What is the Earth made out of?
- Have the children look at the soil first.
- Have a volunteer circle the soil on the Flip Chart.
- Have the children explore soil using their hand lens.
- Ask: What can you tell about soil? (color, texture, and smell) What else did you learn by using your hand lens?
- Repeat procedure with sand.
- Have the children compare and contrast the sand and soil samples.
- Ask: How are the sand and soil alike and different? Which do you think is better for growing plants?
- Discuss results.
- Ask: What can you learn about sand and soil when you look at it and touch it? (Answer may include its color, texture, and objects that are found in it)

- The teacher will explain that the Earth is covered by water and land. Land is made up of rock, sand and soil.
- Provide soil samples, sand, water cans, and observe what happens.
- Discuss wet and muddy.
- Ask: How is the texture of wet soil and sand and dry soil?
- Have the children work in groups.
