Medina City Schools announces Science Olympiad Elementary Invitational Tournament to be held on May 11, 2013

Medina City Schools will host its first-ever Science Olympiad Elementary Invitational Tournament to be held on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at Medina High School. This tournament is designed to create hands-on science learning throughout the school year, culminating in an academic competition. Olympic type medals are awarded for the event winners and winning teams will be recognized. Participation in the tournament is available to all 3rd through 5th graders at all Medina City Elementary schools, and open to any public or private school for those grade levels. Science Olympiad is among the oldest and well-known team science and technology competitions for elementary, middle and high school teams throughout the nation.
The tournament will be modeled after the Science Olympiad format, and will consist of 15 events, and be limited to 40 teams consisting of 15 students per team. There will also be an Open Division where individual entries may participate as well. There will be a team entry fee charged to all schools outside of the Medina City, as well as a participation fee for the Open Division entries. Teams from the Medina City Schools will not be charged an entry fee.
Events are modeled after the Science Olympiad format and will include the following subjects: Balloon Race, Bottle Rocket, Derby Downs (Gravity Vehicle), Don’t Bug Me (Insects), Egg Drop, Forestry, Meteorology-Climate, Mystery Architecture, Reach for the Stars (Astronomy), Robo-Billiards, Rocks & Minerals, Science of Fitness (Anatomy), Storm the Castle (Trebuchet), Water Quality and Write It, Do It.
Various organizations and entities within Medina County, including the Medina County Soil and Water Conservation District, Medina County Parks and Recreation, Cuyahoga Astrological Society, will assist in supervising the events and also provide academic training sessions throughout this upcoming year at various locations in Medina and Cuyahoga counties. These academic sessions will be open to all students, and are free or charge.
