I interviewed Christopher Gilson, who is an MPT student in one of my other classes. I was intrigued by him first because he always wears a scarf and his sunglasses. It’s like his trademark. The interview went excellent. I learned a lot about his philosophy on life, film, the school etc. He is a true creative, one that you don’t come by too often. When I asked, “What do you do in school?” His reply was, “In school, I’m just waiting to get out of class, so I can go make projects.” He constantly carries around a video camera and is always wanting to capture life. His curious mind takes him to places that the average person wouldn’t try going to, for example: The top of The Mark Hopkins hotel. “Everyone in class is always amazed with my films because they look different. They ask me where I got the footage and I tell them I can’t tell.”
I really loved his sharp personality. asked him about the typical assignments he gets and he said, “It’s never just an assignment.” He is not one of those students who completes projects to receive a grade. When I asked him how he got into film he said that he started young. He was always going to movies with his father (who was in the advertising agency during the MAD MEN times). His passion exploded when he was working at the photo counter for Target. He noticed that people take photos in the same exact spot. He started pondering about the idea of people, places, and memories.
He says that lots of MPT students “play it safe” and “keep it simple.” I agreed when he stated that, “simple shouldn't be in your vocabulary in your 20’s.” He is an unconventional thinker who says, “There are no rules.”
He posts his videos on you tube and on facebook and really appreciates comments. Overall, the interview went well! We connected on a very friendly level. We laughed a lot and shared the most random of ideas. I wouldn’t have changed anything and I thanked him verbally. I am thanking him by helping him create a brand identity for himself.
