Blackboard allows for grading student discussion board postings at the forum level or thread level. Grading options can be enabled when a forum is created or by editing forum options at a later time. Once grading has been enabled, a grade center column is automatically created, which can be managed from the grade center.

Blackboard 9.1 also allows you to set “Needs Grading” notifications for graded discussion boards.  By setting a minimum participation threshold, you can ask Blackboard to mark a student’s participation in the grade center automatically.

Enabling Forum Grading

  1. Access the discussion board.
  2. Create a new discussion board forum, or click the options button to the right of an existing forum and choose Edit on the drop-menu.

  1. Under Forum Settings, select Grade Discussion Forum and enter a Points Possible value.
  2. Check the box to Show participants in “needs grading” status after a minimum number of posts.  

For example, if you require students to post at least one original thread and respond to at least two classmates, set the option to show participants in “needs grading” status after every 3 posts.

  1. Once all options have been set, click the Submit button.

Grading a Forum

  1. Access the discussion board.
  2. Click the options button to the right of the forum title.
  3. Choose Grade on the drop-menu.

  1. Click the Grade button to the right of the student’s user information.

  1. A collection of the user’s posts within the forum will appear.  You can review all of the text that the student posted, and review statistics based on the number of posts and the length and timeliness of posts.

  1. To enter a grade, click the Edit Grade button.  Enter the score, feedback, and grading notes as needed.  Click Save Grade to submit your changes.

Enabling Thread Grading

  1. To grade a thread, create a new forum or edit an existing forum.
  2. Select Grade Threads in the Forum Settings area.
  3. As with forums, you can set grade center notification for minimum participation by selecting the Show participants in “needs grading” status... option.

  1. A pop-up window will be displayed notifying you that Allow Members to Create New Threads was turned OFF.  
  2. Click Submit to save changes.
  3. Enter the forum and click the Create Thread button.

  1. Enter the thread title in the subject line, then enter your prompt or questions in the message box.
  2. Check the box to Grade Thread, then enter a points possible.  Set the “needs grading” notifier option as desired.  Once all options have been set, click Submit to post the graded thread.

Grading a Thread

  1. Enter the forum containing graded threads.
  2. Click the Grade Thread button to the right of a graded thread.

  1. Click the Grade button to evaluate the posts and participation of a particular user.
