Workshop: The Assessment Phase Moodle ISU 2


During the Assessment Phase submissions will be assessed using the assessment form created during the Setup Phase.  The submissions must be allocated to students and instructors before moving to the Assessment Phase.

Moving to the Assessment Phase

Once you move to the Assessment Phase students will be able to assess the submission allocated to them. If you have set Access Controls during the Setup Phase, assessments will be limited to those dates. Please make sure that you have allocated the submissions to the students before moving to the Assessment Phase. See Workshop: The Submission Phase for more information.

In the Assessment Phase, when students click on the name of the workshop they will see the Workshop Planner with a list of the tasks they need to complete along with the window for assessment (if you set a window for assessment during the Setup Phase).

In order to move to the Assessment Phase you will do the following:

  1. Click on the name of the workshop.
  2. On the Workshop Planner, beneath the Assessment Phase title, Click the Light Bulb to begin the phase.

  1. You will see a message that describes what can be done during the Assessment Phase.  Click the Continue button to move to the Assessment Phase.

Set the Assessment to be Anonymous

If you have already set the assessment to be anonymous or do not want the assessment to be anonymous, you can skip this section.

To hide the names of the authors and the reviewers:

  1. Click on the name of the workshop.
  2. In the Settings block, Click on Permissions.

  1. In the Advanced role override dropdown menu, Select the Student role.  This change will affect all the individuals with the role of Student.

Note: By default students are enrolled in your course in the Student role.  If anyone has been added in the Student (Manual Enrollment) role, you will need to change the permissions for both roles.

  1. You will see a list of the Capabilities that the Student role is allowed.  Scroll down to View Author Names (mod/workshop:viewauthornames).
  2. In the Permission column, Click the radio button above Prevent.

  1. Scroll down to View Reviewer Names (mod/workshop:viewreviewernames).
  2. In the Permission column, Click the radio button above Prevent.

Note: The Prevent option will make the workshop anonymous.  Do not use the Prohibit option as it may have some unintended consequences.

  1. Scroll to the bottom and Click the Save Changes button.

Note: When students submit their work, Moodle ISU 2 will not show the name of the file.  When student submit their work, there is a Title field.  If a student uses his/her name in the Title field the reviewer will see the student’s name.  In addition, the assessment will not be anonymous if the student includes their name within the body or heading of the file.

Assessing Submissions

In the Assessment Phase students and instructors will assess the submission allocated to each of them.

In order to assess the submissions allocated to you, you will do the following:

  1. Click on the name of the workshop.
  2. Scroll down below the Workshop Planner to the Assigned Submissions to Assess section.

Note: The instructor will see a master list of the allocations before the Assigned Submission to Assess.  The instructor will also see the names of the students, even if the students permissions have been set for anonymous review.

  1. In the Assigned Submission to Assess section you will see the list of submissions assigned to you.
  2. Scroll to the submission you would like to assess.
  3. Click on the Assess button.

  1. You will see a link to download the file followed by the Assessment Form created during the Setup Phase. For each section of the Assessment form, the reviewer will Select the appropriate dropdown menu and Type their comments in the comment fields.

  1. In the Assessment Weight section, Select a weight for the instructor’s assessment.  This will weight the instructor’s assessment when calculating the submission grade.

  1. Scroll to the bottom and Click one of the following buttons:
  1. Save and Continue Editing will save the current entries and text for the current assessment.  This allows you to save your work as you go.
  2. Save and Close will save the assessment form and return you to the Workshop Planner.
  3. Cancel will not save your work and will then return you to the Workshop Planner.

Once you and all the students have assessed the submissions allocated, you are ready to move to the Grade Evaluation Phase.
