  1. Write sentence in the board.
  2. Read sentence aloud.
  3. Explain that words are made out of letters.
  4. Point out at a’s in some words, which children learned to recognize and name in lesson 4.
  5. Have the children point at any letter they know.
  6.  Have the children close their eyes and listen as the teacher makes a sound, such as rapping on the table or ringing a bell.
  7. Have the children identify the sounds.
  8. Have the children repeat the sounds.
  9. Have the children match pictures and draw lines in activity page 3.
  10. Play CD 1, Track 3.

  1. Write sentences on the board.
  2. Read the sentence aloud.
  3. Read sentence again, sliding the hand under each word.
  4. Point out that the words on the boards are the same are the same words I’m saying.
  5. Ask a child to point to any lowercase a’s  or b’s on the board.
  6. The teacher will make two sounds.
  7. Have the children say whether the two sounds are the same or different.
  8. Distribute Activity Page 5.
  9. Ask the children: What color was Ridding Hood’s coat? (red) What does red tells you in a stoplight? What would happen if we did not follow the red light?
  10. Have the children match pictures and draw a red lines under the pictures that are the same.
