Rhythm Studies 1
Assignment #5
Choose 4 sentences of average length to write an accompanying rhythm to. The sentences and the rhythms must meet these conditions:
- One of each in 2/4, 4/4, 3/4 and 6/8 time signatures
- It may include only half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, sixteenth notes and their respective rests. (It may also include ties and dots, if you know how to use them.
- Each sentence must use three or more different subdivisions in it. (e.g. whole notes, eighth notes and half notes)
- The rhythm must follow the text such that it may be read reasonably naturally. This is important: make sure the rhythm matches the words, and the cadence/speed matches the phrasing.
- The sentence may be from any source so long as it is not too short and is well-formed.
- Must indicate a specified tempo to be read at.
Your assignment must be handed in either on manuscript paper, or on computer generated score (e.g. Musescore, Sibelius, Finale, etc.) No hand drawn staves! The written music must be grammatically and idiomatically correct, so use the examples from class (i.e. the computer generated scores) or look at any (professionally) printed music as a reference.
Using your metronome, learn to read the rhythms/sentences that you wrote. Be be prepared to teach your sentences/rhythms to the class.
Due at the beginning of class on Tuesday October 9
