The children will learn to identify and record different types of weather such as rainy, cloudy, snowy, and windy. 

How can I describe the different weather? 

  1. Introduce the lesson by asking the children: What the air is like today?
  2. Talk about the types of weather.
  3. Ask:What are the different types of weather? How do you feel when you are outdoors when is (type of weather)? What else can it be like outdoors? What can you do or not do on _______ type of weather? How can weather change your activity plans?
  4. Explain what weather is.
  5. Have volunteers tell what they think the words rainy, snowy, cloudy, sunny, cold, and hot.
  6. Encourage the children to add their ideas, too, until a working definition is reach for the word.
  7. Have the children complete the following sentence frame: When the weather is (rainy, snowy, windy, cloudy) I like to _________.
  8. Have the children decide on an appropriate  weather symbol.
  9. Distribute weather graph to record daily weather and compare weather of the week.

How can rain help us?

  1. Read aloud the poem “Rain”
  2. Describe water and how rain is form and helps us.
  3. Have the children answer: What is water? How rain forms? How does water helps us?
  4. Review weather conditions using vocabulary words.
  5. Discuss relative temperatures, such a hot, cold, and warm, noting that the weather might be both hot and sunny or cold and snowy.
  6. Distribute weather charts.
  7. Have the children discuss and record weather of the day.
  8. Have the children compare the weather of the previous day with today’s weather.
  9. Ask: How is yesterday’s weather different or the same? How does it feel today? How does today weather affect you?

Identify appropriate clothing for different types of weather. 

What can I wear in differnt kinds of weather?

  1. Have the children recall words that tell about the weather.
  2. Have volunteers describe what they wore to come to school today.
  3. Ask the the children if the weather is nice enough for them to go outside during recess or if they would have to stay indoors.
  4. Have the children sing “Clothe by the Season.
  5. Display Flip chart 30 to review vocabulary terms.
  6. Have the children answer the following questions: What do we call things we wear? Are the clothe on the Flip Chart things that we can wear outside? Why do people wear rubber boots? Why do we wear appropriate weather clothing? What happens if we do not wear clothing according to the weather?
  7. Compare clothing
  8. Discuss how weather may determine their activities and what they wear to stay warm in a snowy or cold weather, cool in the warm and hot weather, and dry in rainy weather.
  9. Discuss weather of the day.
  10. Distribute weather chart.
