PANEL LAYOUT:

a wide panel covers the top half of the page edge to edge

and four panels go below it

PANEL ONE: It’s a bleak day. Bird’s eye view shot of a 4 story tall apartment building. The building has three stairwells with windows going all the way up through which you can see inside. Some of the apartment windows on the right are barred. There is a small row of cars parked across from the building against a curb that leads to a small field of grass. A van is parked close to the right most stairwell. The side of the van reads “luxury linens” there is one person unpacking things. The focus is on two figures that are turning a corner and heading towards the middle of the three stairwells. It rained recently so there are puddles all over the uneven asphalt.

PANEL TWO: A closer image of the two people walking. The slightly taller one is a 28 year-old man with an unshaven scraggly beard and uncombed messy hair. He’s wearing a loose fitting shirt and some old pants. The clothes are nice, but wrinkled. The other figure is his younger brother around 21 years of age, he’s got long hair, and a curly moustache. The younger brother is wearing a dark jacket and tight light-blue jeans. They’re not talking. The older brother has his hands in his pockets.

PANEL THREE: The older brother is looking around indiscriminately. The younger brother stares ahead without paying attention to him.

PANEL FOUR: The older brother continues to look around with his brows furrowed as if something is bothering him. The younger brother continues to ignore him.

PANEL FIVE: They walk up to the people next to the van and the younger brother greets a friend who’s around the same age as he is. His brother stands beside him with his hands in his pockets.

Younger brother: “Hey! Welcome back”

PAGE TWO:

PANEL LAYOUT:

two rows of four panel columns

with smaller panels within them to focus on expressions

PANEL ONE: The younger brother hugs his friend. The older brother stands on the side looking off blankly, with his hands in his pockets.

PANEL TWO: The older brother shakes hands with the friend with his brows still furrowed. The younger brother narrows his eyes while looking at his brother’s expression during the interaction (small inset panel).

PANEL THREE: The younger brother and his friend proceed to chit chat in the background while the older brother stands off to the side (clearly not part of the conversation) and continues to look around.

PANEL FOUR: The two that are talking continue to chit chat and fade even more into the background. (three inset panels: the older brother laughs to himself, then smirks, and furrows his brow again)

PANEL FIVE: In the background the younger brother starts motioning towards the stairs off panel. The older brother takes notice.

Younger brother: “Well, we have to head back up stairs...”

PANEL SIX: The older brother starts walking back towards the stairs. (inset panel: the friend grabs the shoulder of the younger brother_

PANEL SEVEN: In the background the friend brings the younger brother closer to tell him something in private. The older brother turns around and stops, still with his hands in his pockets.

PANEL EIGHT: The older brother opens the door to the stairs, seeing that he doesn’t need to be there. Speech bubbles come in from the side.

Younger brother: “This is about the linens, right?

Friend: “Yeah, about the linens...”

PAGE THREE:

PANEL LAYOUT:

two rows of four panel columns

the columns on the right are more vertical than the ones on the left

PANEL ONE: The younger brother moves away from the van with his friend toward the puddles between the grass field and the house. The door to the stairwell shuts in the background. The friend is apparently saying something to the younger brother, but it isn’t revealed what it is.

PANEL TWO: A vertical panel with a close up of the windows showing the stairs in the stair well. In the bottom most window the older brother is on the left side climbing upwards.

PANEL THREE: An image of the puddles through which the younger brother and his friend are walking. Their feet are almost completely submerged. A speech bubble comes in from the side, not indicating exactly who’s speaking.

Friend:  “Do you ever hear screams of vengeance and pain for one’s parents coming from over there?”

PANEL FOUR: A vertical panel with a close up of the windows showing the stairs in the stair well. In the bottom most window the older brother is now higher up the stairs on the right side climbing towards the second floor.

PANEL FIVE: You can see the reflection of the younger brother in a large puddle. The puddles almost completely fill the frame. You can see the speech bubble indicate that the reflection of the younger brother is speaking.

Younger brother: “I heard a blood curdling cry a week ago”

PANEL SIX: A vertical panel with a close up of the windows showing the stairs in the stair well. The older brother climbed up higher, he can be seen sitting on the stairs in the second window.

Friend: “I heard this, like, yesterday and the day before that”

PANEL SEVEN: You can see the reflection of the younger brother looking back and one of the two character’s feet steps into the puddle disturbing the image.

Younger brother: “No, I haven’t...”

PANEL EIGHT: A vertical panel with a close up of the windows showing the stairs in the stair well. The older brother is sitting alone in the second window he has his shirt removed... he has a speech bubble, but it’s contained within the stairwell window... the text in it is illegible.

PAGE FOUR:

PANEL LAYOUT:

One large panel fills the whole page edge to edge

and two smaller panels near the top are on top of the large panel

PANEL ONE: A view of the younger brother looking back at his brother in the stairwell in the background. His friend is off panel.

PANEL TWO: The younger brother looks forward again. The friend leans into the frame, while also looking forward ahead away from the apartment building.

Friend: “Why the hell would that be there?”

LARGE PANEL: A tree occupies most of the image and it looks ominous and overwhelming. It looks like a weeping willow whose branches han all the way down to the ground and. Vines have overgrown on the tree and hang from the branches as well. There is a large handmade wind chime hanging in the tree, it appears to be made out of thin metal car parts that have completely rusted over. They have corroded holes all over them. Two small silhouettes of the younger brother and the friend can be seen from the back looking up at the tree.

PAGE FIVE:

PANEL LAYOUT:

Four wide panels that get taller as they go down

PANEL ONE: A view of the younger brother stepping over the curb and on to the grass and spreading the low hanging branches of the tree. The friend is standing back off of the curb between tow cars in a puddle.

PANEL TWO: The younger brother is within the perimeter of branches, which form a kind of wall that surrounds him the trunk of the tree and the wind chime. This wall of branches makes the interior quite dark. Some of the branches and vines drape off of his shoulders as he moves forward.

PANEL THREE: The younger brother is closer to the wind chime, more branches hang off of him. He’s looking up at the strange object. It’s perfectly still. He’s reaching to touch it. A speech bubble comes in from the side, clearly outside the tree.

Friend: “Isn’t it creepy how the vines hang on to you like that”

PANEL FOUR: The wind chime clangs violently. The younger brother starts stumbling backwards out of of the tree.

PAGE SIX:

PANEL LAYOUT:

The top two panels are wide

and there’s two rows of two panels below

PANEL ONE: The younger brother exits the tree backwards out of the left side of it. Further left you can see his older brother pulling at one of the roots of the tree which extend far in both sides across the grassy field.

PANEL TWO: A similar panel to the top one but there’s more dirt tilled up by the older brother. The younger brother has turned and hurries towards the older one.

PANEL THREE: A close up of the brother digging at the dirt from a low angle. He has his brows furrowed. Speech bubble comes in from the left.

Younger brother: “What is it? What do you want?”

PANEL FOUR: A shot from a higher angle of  both the younger brother and the older. The younger brother has his hand on the older brother’s shoulder.

PANEL FIVE: Same shot as before, but the older brother is throwing a ripped piece of root behind him onto a pile of dirt.

PANEL SIX: Same shot as before, the roots and dirt are piling up behind them.

Younger brother: “Let me...”

PAGE SEVEN:

PANEL LAYOUT:

two rows of four panel columns

PANEL ONE: A shot similar to that of the older brother but instead now it’s of the younger brother riping at the roots.

PANEL TWO: A shot of his hands grasping small roots.

PANEL THREE: The roots fall apart in his hands as he squeezes them to pull them out.

PANEL FOUR: A shot from above. The younger brother digs deeper into the ground. He’s getting dirt on his clothes. A large pile of dirt forms around the hole.

PANEL FIVE: A shot of the younger brother’s hands grasping on to something bigger in the dirt.

PANEL SIX: A shot form above him as he tugs at it.

PANEL SEVEN: A shot from above, the younger brother lets his arms go loose because he couldn’t pull it out.

PANEL EIGHT: A shot form above, he redoubles his effort. He tugs at it once more.

PAGE EIGHT:

PANEL LAYOUT:

two rows of 2 panel columns

and one large panel at the bottom

PANEL ONE: The younger brother is pulling at a large root. It’s coming out of the earth. The earth is cracking around it.

PANEL TWO: Zoomed out shot, the younger brother pulls it out and large sections of the earth around it get turned over with it. It looks like he’s standing in a crater by this point. The older brother is nowhere to be seen.

PANEL THREE: A close up of the younger brother holding a large dirty root close to him against his chest. He’s looking down at it.

PANEL FOUR: A zoomed in image of the root.

PANEL FIVE: A large image of the root, it looks magical. There is a large caption box at the bottom of the image.

CAPTION:

(bottom of panel)

“It was different from the others, its weight and density gave it a obvious significance. This is clearly what he was after. It started emanating a melody that would surely end.”

PAGE NINE:

PANEL LAYOUT:

Three wide panels at the top

and three tall panels at the bottom

PANEL ONE: The younger brother looks back at the stairwell in the background. Still clutching the root that’s covered in dirt.

PANEL TWO: He starts running towards the door to the stairwell while clutching the root closely. His foot is splashing up water from the puddles.

PANEL THREE: It’s a similar panel to the top one, he’s grasping the door handle and going inside. There’s a trail of dirt that’s left behind him.

PANEL FOUR: The younger brother is running up stairs. closely clutching the root.

PANEL FIVE: Another shot of the brother on the same stairwell, but now he’s up higher. There’s dirt, but less of it now, trailing behind him.

PANEL SIX: Another shot of the stair well and he’s making the turn around to climb the next set of stairs. Dirt is trailing everywhere.

PAGE TEN:

PANEL LAYOUT:

One wide panel at the top middle and bottom

after the top one there’s two smaller panels

and there’s also two smaller ones after the middle panel

PANEL ONE: (wide panel) A shot of the younger brother near a door at the top of the stairs. He looks out of breath. The door doesn’t have a door handle.

PANEL TWO: An image of the younger brother’s hand grasping the edges of the round deadbolt.

PANEL THREE: An image of the door swinging open with ease.

PANEL FOUR: (wide panel) A shot similar to the first panel, where the younger brother is already inside and the door is wide open. There is a dartboard hanging on the door. There are dart holes all over it and there’s also quite a few trailing down all the way to the ground.

PANEL FIVE: The younger brother is peeking into a bedroom. No one is there.

PANEL SIX: The younger brother is peeking into a kitchen. No one is there.

PANEL SEVEN: (wide panel) The younger brother is standing looking disheartened in a hallway between all of the rooms in the apartment. His arms are hanging down loosely by his sides. The root is also hanging loosely from one of his dirty hands. The root doesn’t look dirty anymore. There’s a small pile of dirt underneath it.
